SUMMARY:  Provides instructional leadership to staff including, curriculum planning, review and implementation, and professional development.  Responsible for the day-to-day building administration and the safety and welfare of both students and staff.  Ensures a safe, pleasant and effective educational atmosphere.  Provides discipline as necessary and enforces school policies.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Supervision of Instruction (Faculty):
    • Conducts teachers’ meetings
    • Discusses student matters with faculty members involved
    • Involves faculty in curriculum study, development, and possible changes
    • Stresses “excellence in instruction” and best possible instructional methods
    • Observes classroom instruction
    • Prepares teacher evaluation reports and discusses with teachers
    • Estimates quality of faculty performance in relation to pupil achievement
    • Consults with counselor regarding students and teachers
    • Assigns rooms and schedules classes for faculty members
    • Keeps the lines of communication open; listens to suggestions, grievances and innovative ideas from members of the staff and other personnel
    • Makes constructive suggestions to faculty when needed
      • Supervision of Instruction (Students):
        • Registers and assigns students to class sections
        • Conducts student orientation regarding rules, regulations and classes
        • Sets general rules regarding school operations
        • Decides what discipline measures are needed when students are referred by counselors or teachers
        • Meets with parents regarding student’s progress
        • Determines promotion and/or retention of students after consultation with teachers
        • Coordinates all student affairs
        • Dispenses medication according to the conditions listed in Policy ST803.4, administering medicine to students
        • May suspend students pursuant to discipline policies
          • General:
            • Attends educational meetings
            • Disseminates information of meetings (local and when possible on the state level) to the staff, central office and school board
            • Follows and carries out school board policy and administrative regulations
            • Analyzes standardized and other test results
            • Studies teacher report card grades
            • Reviews textbooks and school supplies
            • Keeps parents involved in school activities
            • Invites parents to visit school and classrooms
            • Explains school policy and curriculum to parents
              • Business and Non-instructional:
                • Keeps accurate daily student attendance registers according to state guidelines as well as continually monitors attendance and keeps the central office informed of absenteeism
                • Maintains inventory of textbooks and equipment. Sends copies of equipment inventory reports to the Central Office with serial numbers listed
                • Sends in daily and weekly cafeteria reports
                • Supervises cafeteria operations during lunch hours whenever possible
                • Supervises building maintenance and cleanliness
                • Inspects buildings periodically and requests repairs or additions to maintenance supervisor when needed
                • Ensures that the staff remain “safety conscious” and reports any safety hazards
                • Consults with teachers on needs and the preparation of the budget
                • Compiles yearly budgets for the building
                • Discusses budgets with the assistant superintendent and business manager for review of needs
                • Administers minor first aid to injured students when nurse is not available
                • Notifies parents of children with major illnesses or injuries
                • Coordinates and cooperates with all auxiliary agencies
                • Keeps newspapers and radio stations informed of items of interest at school
                • Keeps the Central Office informed of innovative practices
  • Is responsible for the supervision and evaluation of certified and classified personnel in the building

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public
  • Knowledge of data usage, including collection, analysis, interpretation, and reporting
  • Ability to manage budgets and personnel
  • Ability to communicate effectively using all forms of communication
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Knowledge of State and Federal programs
  • Knowledge of Arizona Academic Standards, Instruction and Accountability
  • Knowledge of budgeting and school finance
  • Knowledge and experience in the use of technology to enhance instructional delivery
  • Produce accurate work and complete assignments with minimal supervision
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of situations
  • Ability to work cooperatively and courteously with staff, students, parents and community members
  • Knowledge of applicable Federal and State laws, district procedures and Board policies
  • Ability to handle confrontation and conflict

 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Master’s Degree in Education
  • Three (3) years experience in teaching
  • Arizona Administrative Certificate K-12
  • Bilingual ability in Spanish and English strongly preferred
