Job Summary
The Lactation/Discharge/Educator Registered Nurse is a lactation-certified nurse who demonstrates clinical expertise, professional judgment, and knowledge of the breastfeeding dyad, and is responsible for providing education and support to breastfeeding mothers and families, prenatally and postpartum, in the in-patient and outpatient setting. In addition to conducting lactation assessment of the dyad, creating a lactation plan of care as needed, this position will be responsible for providing the appropriate designated education as needed, whether it be discharge or childbirth, and will assists with staff education events, as well as community outreach related to lactation, discharge, or childbirth education including community-based, customer-oriented childbirth preparation classes. This position also ensures appropriate, safe and timely postpartum discharge where discharge education is given to all postpartum patients, and functions independently in a non-administrative role. Acts as an advocate for patients, families and significant others as well as a resource for clinical staff.
Required Qualifications
- Require a minimum of one (1) year of related maternal infant nursing.
- Require graduate of an accredited school of nursing or a diploma program. For new hires after 2012, Bachelor of Science Degree in nursing (BSN) is required within specified timeframe as outlined in the New Hire BSN Agreement policy (126.045).
- Require graduation from an accredited lactation counselor or consultant program; must obtain within six (6) months of hire date.
- Require International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), Certified Breastfeeding Counselor (CBC), Certified Lactation Consultant (CLC) certification, or similar.
- Require Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification; must obtain within ninety (90) days of hire.

- Prefer demonstrated effective educational skills adaptable to the in-patients in the classroom and bedside setting as well as the clinical staff.
- Prefer demonstrated ability to be a self-starter with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
- Prefer Child Passenger Safety (CPS) and Childbirth Education (CE) certifications.
