Job Description
This work involves responsibility for providing counseling services for individuals and family members who
have alcohol and/or other drug related problems. The work includes maintaining an active caseload
consistent with agency practice. Clinical work is performed under the supervision of a Qualified Health
Professional and/or an addiction services program coordinator in accordance with the practice(s) established
by the agency. Does related work as required.
Minimum Qualifications (at least)
A. Possession of a Master’s Degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or related field; OR
B. Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree in Counseling, Social Work, Human Services, Psychology, or closely
related field, and two (2) years of full-time experience in addiction or mental health counseling; OR
C. Possession of an Associate’s Degree in Counseling, Social Work, Human Services, Psychology, or a closely
related field, and four (4) years of full-time paid experience in addiction or mental health counseling, OR
D. Possession of a Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor Certificate (CASAC) or a
Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor Trainee Certificate (CASAC-T), and six (6) years
of full-time experience in addiction or mental health counseling.
(Degree must have been awarded by a college or university by a regional, national, or specialized agency
recognized as an accrediting agency by the US Department of Education/US Secretary of Education. If your
degree was awarded by an educational institution outside the United States and its territories, you must
provide independent verification of equivalency. . You must pay the required
evaluation fee.)
NOTE: “An OASAS Qualified Health Professional (QHP) preferred. Must become a QHP within three years.
Upon individual review, part-time, volunteer and internship experience in addiction or mental health
counseling may be substituted for the required full-time paid experience.
Typical Work Activities (*Illustrative)
- Assesses individuals to determine the need for alcohol and/or other drug services and the appropriate
- Develops an individualized treatment plan based upon a thorough assessment of the needs of the
- Provides treatment services including, but not limited to, individual and group counseling, patient
- Provides case management services for active caseload, including but not limited to, referral,
- Attends staff meeting to review cases and evaluate program effectiveness;
- Provides on-call coverage and consultation services, as assigned;
- Documents all services provided in a manner consistent with agency policy and practice;
- Attends in-service training sessions, community presentations and workshops to maintain clinical
- Related tasks as necessary.
