What are the responsibilities and job description for the Unit Secretary/Patient Care Assistant position at Saratoga Hospital?
Summary of Position:
The Unit Secretary/PCA facilitates and communicates unit processes in coordination with appropriate members of the health care team. They deliver patient centered care in a safe and healing environment that is timely, consistent and effective; resulting in the best possible outcomes.
Primary Job Responsibilities:
Communication: Communicates and coordinates patient admissions, discharges and transfers in conjunction with the Charge Nurse, Director and Throughput Manager. Facilitates communication between departments and physicians’ offices via telephone and fax. Answers phone promptly and courteously and directs calls timely and appropriately. Accurately transcribes physician orders and consults. While in the PCA role observes and communicates pertinent information and changes in patient's condition to the RN. Recognizes and reports abnormal results or complaints to RN, Charge RN and/or the Director. Responds appropriately and professionally to patient/family requests.
Order Entry: Demonstrates computer literacy through accurate scheduling of all tests, lab work, x-rays, consults, diet changes, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and respiratory therapy as ordered. Inputs all admission and discharge data. Demonstrates computer literacy through accurate data entry.
Medical Records: Ensures that the Medical Record is organized and complete. Maintains all medical records by thinning as needed and filing thinned documents in chart and chronological order. Files all current documents into the medical record in a timely manner (i.e. labs, x-ray, flow sheets, ADL sheets, etc.)
Supply Management: Monitors and maintains par levels for all supplies both routine and special orders. Returns unused supplies for credit in a timely manner. Coordinates and facilitates the purchase and repair of all equipment.
Patient Care: Delivers direct care to satisfy the needs of patients. Delivers care by reflecting knowledge of nursing skills and therapeutic nursing measures related to musculoskeletal function, respiratory and cardiovascular function, bowel and bladder function, nutritional maintenance, specimen testing, comfort and safety measures. Provides for maximum comfort and anticipates patient needs and in designated areas rounds on patients every two hours.
Patient Safety: Provides for patient safety through preventive measures (e.g. two patient identifiers, gait belts, bed/chair alarms, fall prevention and the maintenance of skin integrity). Practices appropriate hand-washing techniques, adheres to infection control, and isolation procedures. Responds appropriately to fire, disaster and other emergency situations.
Minimum Qualifications:
High school graduate or GED. Previous computer experience. Experience dealing with the public
Salary Range: $18 - $29.55
Pay Grade: PC2
Compensation may vary based upon, but not limited to: overall experience and qualifications, shift, and location.
