Work under the direct supervision of the Head Teacher providing a flexible educational program in order to meet the needs of the diverse student population through exemplary teaching and ensuring a positive, strong professional culture supporting student learning.  Incumbents promote the aims of the school through implementation of policies and procedures of the Sarpy County Sheriff's Department as well as providing the resources so as to promote and secure the achievement of pupils.

As an employee of Sarpy County, you receive regular pay for the services you provide at a rate of $44,911 per year. In addition to your hourly wage, Sarpy County provides benefits, such as insurance and retirement, which are valued at up to $28,420.13 per year.

  • Posted pay range is based on working 1568 hours per year - Teachers are allowed to take vacation during the school year. 
  • Selected teacher can elect to work 1728 hours per year by working 4 weeks of summer school - pay range for 1728 hours per year is $49,494-$64,259

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Fulfill the responsibilities of teaching as defined in Nebraska State law, and follow the Code of Ethics adopted by the Nebraska State Board of Education.
Effectively apply professional competencies to meet the minimum standards as adopted by the Nebraska State Board of Education.
Ensure compliance with Nebraska State Board of Education standards and/or IEP accommodations with individual students. 
Communicate regularly with home district schools, requesting transcripts when needed. 
Administrate ACT or other state standard testing. 
Learn, apply, and follow all policies, rules, regulations, and directives of the Sarpy County Juvenile Justice Center (JJC).
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with representatives for the juvenile and correctional community, coworkers, residents, and the general public.
Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning, appropriate to the maturing abilities of the students, and enables students to achieve their full potential.
Foster and maintain a positive relationship with students in daily work activities.
Monitor, evaluate, and review classroom practice; promote improvement strategies to ensure underperformance is challenged at all levels; and ensure effective corrective action and follow-up.
Implement an individualized education plan for each student taking into consideration the student's learning style, strengths, and weaknesses.
Oversee students' use of computers and software.
Monitor students' progress in the various program components, provide appropriate feedback, and review student files.
Collaborate with other teachers and JJC staff to support student achievement.
Exhibit character, moral standards, and personal habits which are temperate in nature such that they may be emulated by students.
Report to work with regular, predictable, and consistent attendance.
Assume administrative responsibilities in the absence of the Head Teacher, and support professional development efforts.
Assist in coordinating the transition of students into the Day School at the appropriate grade level.
Enforce safety and security rules of the JJC Education Programs, and account for all material sued for instructional purposes at the end of each class period.
Research new topic areas and maintain current subject knowledge.
Participate in departmental meetings, communicate with parents/legal guardians, and attend JJC training events.
Respond to emergencies including, but not limited to, fire, medical, and security; and follow established policies and procedures.
 
Peripheral Duties
Submit maintenance work orders for any item that needs repair.
Participate in future development of programs.
Perform other duties as required or assigned.
 
 MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience 
Bachelor's degree in a related field of study from an accredited university or college.
Must possess a current and active State of Nebraska Teacher Certification.  Endorsement in one or more specific secondary subjects preferred.
 
Special Requirements
Must have and maintain throughout employment a valid Driver's License, own mode of transportation, as well as meet eligibility requirements of "acceptable driver standards" as defined by the County.
 
Must be able to successfully complete the JJC Defensive Tactics Modified Program on an annual basis.
 
Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of principles and techniques of basic education and/or special education
Skill in composing clear, concise written documentation
Ability to exercise objective, independent judgment and discretion
Ability to plan and organize a schedule, set priorities, and meet deadlines
Ability to communicate effectively, in English, both verbally and in writing
Ability to work independently and efficiently while managing stressful situations and frequent interruptions
Ability to handle and maintain confidential and sensitive information including, but not limited to, juveniles' medical information/records, department communication and documents, and other similar information
Ability to understand and follow exacting verbal or written direction
Ability to operate standard office equipment such as a computer with Microsoft Office and specialized software, multiline phone, copier, scanner, fax, calculator, and law enforcement radio
 PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
The physical demands and working environment described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Work is performed indoors in a secure detention facility or alternative education setting.  Incumbents may be exposed to infectious/communicable diseases, blood borne pathogens, and potential risk of injury from distraught juveniles.  Noise levels are typically moderate but at times could be extreme.
 
Work requires physical activity including frequent periods of sitting/remaining stationary and walking/moving about as well as occasional standing/remaining upright, bending, reaching, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.  The employee must occasionally lift, maneuver, and/or move up to 10 pounds.  The incumbent must possess the hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate/manipulate equipment (use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects/tools).
 
Required sensory abilities include vision, hearing, speech, smell, and touch. Visual abilities, correctable to normal ranges, include peripheral, close and color vision as well as the ability to adjust focus.  Communication abilities include the ability to talk (verbal exchange) and hear within normal ranges.
