About the job

The API Developer Experience Team is looking for an API Integration Engineer to help us architect and implement tools and solutions aimed at maximizing the quality and consistency of our application programming interfaces (APIs) and other customer focused developer assets. Our team collaborates with users and across all parts of SAS business to create standards and write code to help our product teams meet those standards, to enable teams to design and develop user friendly APIs, and to automate safeguards and process so teams can publish those APIs to our new developer portal at https://developer.sas.com/.

As an API Integration Engineer, you will:

• Architect, deliver, support, maintain, and continuously improve tooling and test and deployment automation that leverages OpenAPI 3 specifications across the entire API lifecycle and within our DevOps pipeline. Some examples of the kinds of tooling and enablement we work on include:
  • API design tooling
  • API standards linting (spectral)
  • Contract Testing
  • API documentation rendering via open source tooling as well as on https://developer.sas.com/
  • Document deployment automation
  • Client and server SDK generation tools
  • API conversion tools
• Assess and make recommendations about the use of existing open source tooling that supports the API lifecycle
• Solicit feedback and requirements from stakeholders and prioritize new functionality aligned with overall business needs
• Contribute requirements, feedback (and source code in some cases) back to our customer facing products and solutions to improve API quality or developer experience
• Regularly communicate work progress with management, identifying issues early and resolving them to quickly avoid or minimize impact to both our and our stakeholders’ projects
• Anticipate time needed to complete projects and assist in project estimates and scheduling
• Update job knowledge through independent and structured research

Required qualifications

• 5 years of experience in a software engineering role.
• Bachelors degree in computer science, engineering, or a related quantitative field.
• Equivalent combination of related education, training and experience may be considered in place of the above qualifications.
• Experience with:
• Linux operating system, commands and shell programming tools
• Scripting languages (for example bash, python) and automation techniques for testing and deployment
• Writing or leveraging OpenAPI 3
• Understanding of the API lifecycle and awareness of common tooling across that ecosystem
• Understanding of DevOps principles and commonly used tooling in DevOps pipelines

Preferred qualifications

• Masters degree or higher in computer science, engineering or a related quantitative field.
• Experience integrating/interacting with SAS programmatically through one or more types of APIs found on https://developer.sas.com/
• Familiarity with usage and programming for cloud platforms such as AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure
• Understanding of RESTful API principles
• Experience with:
• Docker and Kubernetes
• API Management Solutions including Azure API Management
• User and developer experience design (UX and DX)
• Developing and/or consuming HTTP APIs, especially REST
• Contributing to open source projects
• HTML, CSS, Javascript for building, supporting, maintaining internal dashboards
• Go and/or Java programming
• Familiarity with Agile methodologies
