What are the responsibilities and job description for the ASL Communication Tutor position at SAU 80, Shaker Regional School District?
The ASL Communication Tutor is responsible for providing American Sign Language (ASL) support to students, facilitating communication between students and staff, and assisting with classroom activities. This role also includes supporting an individual student with behavioral and mobility needs in the school setting.
Essential Duties:
*ASL Instruction and Support:
Assist students with communication by using American Sign Language to interpret lessons, instructions, and classroom interactions. Support both students and staff in facilitating communication and understanding.
*Behavioral Support:
Help implement student behavior plans, assisting with managing behaviors, promoting positive social interactions, and providing support for emotional regulation. Collaborate with teachers and staff to assess and address behavioral needs.
*Mobility Assistance:
Provide mobility assistance to students, including helping them transition in and out of chairs, use the restroom, walk, and reposition in chairs or wheelchairs when necessary.
*Life Skills Support:
Assist students in developing and improving life skills, such as communication, self-esteem, and SEL, helping them navigate school activities and social interactions.
*Health and Safety Monitoring:
Monitor students for any health changes, such as shifts in vital signs or behavior, and report findings to the school nurse. Administer first aid as needed, following school health protocols.
*Documentation and Record Keeping:
Maintain accurate records and reports regarding student progress, behavior, health observations, and mobility assistance provided.
*Collaboration with Staff:
Work closely with teachers, counselors, and other school staff to support individualized student needs, including assisting with assessment, planning, and adjusting support practices in ASL communication.
*Additional Duties as Assigned:
Assist with other student needs, including supervision during out-of-classroom activities, and other tasks related to promoting a safe and supportive learning environment.strategies.
*Professional Development:
Participate in ongoing training and professional development to stay current on best practices in ASL communication.
