Certified Nursing Assistant/Trained Medication Aide

Description: Responsible for safely administrating medication in accordance with facility policy, state/federal regulations. Adheres to guidelines and principles as developed by the Minnesota Department of Health, the Minnesota Nursing Association for standards of practice the principles and guidelines of medication administration. Works within the established scope of practice at all times.

Essential Duties

  • Assists resident with ADLS's providing for physical, social, and spiritual needs. Provides quality of care to enhance the dignity and individuality of each resident in a home-like environment. 
  • Gathers data and documents such as weight, vital signs, skin condition l&O, nutritional intake, behavior changes or changes in resident condition for nurses to input on resident MDS. 
  • Refers to/and follows resident ADL care plan for resident care. Clarifies questions on resident care with charge nurse. 
  • Maintains confidentiality of resident related information in compliance with HIPAA regulations. Respects confidentiality of organization, department, staff, residents, and family.
  •  Adheres to facility policy, state and federal guidelines, and
    principles for medication storage, handling, ordering, and
    administration and destruction. Understands and accepts
    limitations of own competencies and does not perform beyond these limitations.
  • Maintains security of controlled substances and narcotics at all
    times. Signs in narcotic record medications administered or lost appropriately and counts narcotics with another licensed nurse.
  • Under the supervision of a licensed nurse, is responsible for reporting and observing medication administration, effect and side effects.
  • Adheres to the 5R's of medication administration: Right Route, Drug, Does, Time, and Person.

Other Duties

  • Is approachable and friendly to all residents and their families. Professionally answers the phone, identifying self, and station in a friendly manner and relays messages promptly. Gives directions to visitors who are unfamiliar with the facility as needed.
  • Attends mandatory in-services as required. Attends all other in-services as requested by department manager/administrator. 
  • Promotes quality of life activities by assisting resident participation in desired activities. Encourages resident to identify desired activities and reports resident activities to department managers. 
  • Accepts assignments in a positive manner designated by the Director of Nursing/supervisor, which may include participating in QA/QI projects, increases clinical skill competencies, in anticipation of proposed population changes. 
  • Gives proper notice of tardiness or absences. Adheres to meal/break times. Uses time clock properly. Accomplishes workload within time allowed. 
  • Other Duties as assigned. 

Experience and Qualifications

  • CNA Certificate
  • Trained Medication Aide Certificate
