POSITION SUMMARY:
The Parenting Educator, under the direction of the Child Placement Services Supervisor, is responsible for providing parenting education to Tribal families.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)
- Provides parenting education from an established curriculum.
- Transports clients to and from visitations, parenting sessions, and any services as needed.
- Supervises visitation between parents and children.
- Completes necessary paperwork within established time frames.
- Maintains client files according to program guidelines.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)
- Administers breathalyzer tests and drug screens as needed.
- Testifies in court as needed.
- Provides community awareness education and events.
- Attends meetings and trainings as required.
- All other job-related duties as assigned.
CONTACTS:
Immediate peers, peers in other departments, immediate supervisor/manager, managers in other departments, customers and outside vendors/service providers.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Position is medium with lifting of 50 pounds maximum and frequent lifting/carrying up to 25 pounds. Physical factors include use of hearing, smell, near/midrange/far vision, depth perception, field of vision; frequent sitting, carrying, driving occasional standing, walking, pushing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, reaching, manual handling, use of color vision, bending and typing. Working conditions include frequent exposure to weather, extreme heat/cold, wet/humidity, and noise and air quality. Potential hazards include frequent client exposure and computer use and occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts, electric shock, chemicals, insecticides/pesticides, infectious exposure, needles/syringes and equipment use.
REQUIREMENTS:
Education: High School diploma or equivalent required. Associates Degree in human services, psychology, sociology, social work, criminal justice, corrections, early childhood education, political science, law enforcement or education preferred.
Experience: Minimum of 1-year experience working with families or in the fields of human services, psychology, sociology, social work, criminal justice, corrections, early childhood education, political science, law enforcement, or education required.
Certification/License: Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable by the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must comply with annual driver’s license review and insurability standards with the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must maintain confidentiality. Will be required to undergo and successfully pass a background check. Must maintain a good moral character standing. Will be required to complete and pass pre-employment drug testing.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Must have working knowledge and be able to use word processing and spreadsheet and data base software. Knowledge of or the ability to learn how to properly use child vehicle restraints required. Knowledge of or the ability to learn the stages of child development required. Knowledge of or the ability to learn of appropriate parenting skills. Knowledge of or the ability to learn of universal safety precautions applicable to position. Must have ability to complete required facilitator training in established parenting education curriculum, training will be provided. Must have ability to confront and redirect inappropriate client behavior. Must have ability to mentor and model appropriate parenting skills. Must be comfortable interacting with children and their families. Must be able to work with minimal to no supervision. Must be self motivated. Must have deductive reasoning and critical thinking skills. Must be able to establish appropriate relationships and boundaries with clients. Must be able to establish and maintain effective communication with co-workers, supervisors and guests. Must be able to work in high stress environment and handle difficult situations. Must be able to handle potentially hostile clients and adversarial situations. Must be flexible and available to work various shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays. Native American preferred.
