POSITION SUMMARY:
The Adult Education Instructor, under the direction of the Education Director, provides individual and small-group instruction to eligible participants seeking to complete a General Educational Development (GED) certificate.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Provides direct services, provides individual and small-group instruction to eligible participants in a classroom setting, evaluates student progress, provides educational counseling to assist and encourage students.
- Maintains student records including pre- and post-test scores and weekly attendance sheets.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Maintains confidentiality of student information with tribal and federal laws, regulations, policies, and practices.
- All other job-related duties as assigned.
CONTACTS:
Immediate peers, immediate supervisor/manager, customers and authorized individuals under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Position light with lifting of 20 pounds and frequent carrying/lifting up to 10 pounds. Physical factors include constant use of hearing, near vision, typing; frequent sitting; occasional standing and walking. Working conditions include occasional exposure to weather. Potential hazards include constant computer use, occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts, electric shock, infectious exposure, client contact and equipment.
REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in secondary education with a valid Math, Science, English, or Social Studies endorsement preferred. Will accept a secondary education degree/endorsement in another subject area that supports the ability to teach general education classes. Minimum requirement: 60 semester credit hours from an accredited college or university or an Associate’s Degree with a minimum GPA of 2.0. Must enroll in an accredited teacher preparation program within one academic year of hire.
Experience: Experience working with adult learners preferred.
Certification/License: Valid State of Michigan Secondary Teaching Certificate in one of the core content areas listed above preferred. Will be required to undergo and successfully pass a background check. Must maintain a good moral character standing. Will be required to complete and pass pre-employment drug testing.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Must have working knowledge of Math, Science, Reading, Writing, and Social Studies. Must be able to communicate effectively with adult learners. Must be able to maintain and generate accurate and complete records and reports. Must be able to teach adult learners with differing abilities. Must be able to work with minimal to no supervision. Must be able to work evenings. Must maintain confidentiality. Native American preferred.
