POSITION SUMMARY :

The Field Surveillance Officer / Bailiff, under the direction of the Chief Judge, is responsible for assisting the probation department in monitoring and verifying Tribal Court clients' compliance with court-ordered services and provides transportation assistance to court clients to court-ordered services, and provides Bailiff services for the Tribal Court

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS : (includes, but is not limited to, the following)

  • Monitors defendants and juvenile offenders' compliance with court-ordered services and conditions of bond and probation.
  • Provides transportation assistance to defendants, juveniles, and respondent parents to court-ordered services.
  • Conducts urine (drug) screens and PBT’s (preliminary breath tests) and reports results to Probation Officers
  • Reports results of compliance checks to Probation Officers daily.
  • Provides weekly report on duties performed to Chief Judge.
  • Maintains order and efficiency in the courtroom.
  • Ensures the safety of all who use the Court
  • Serves legal documents upon individuals, such as subpoenas and summons

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES : (includes, but is not limited to, the following)

  • Attends meetings, conferences, trainings on behalf of the Court.
  • Keeps apprised of changes in procedures, rules, and laws.
  • Performs a wide variety of related duties to help the judge and magistrate accomplish the work of the court.
  • Prepares safety plans and emergency preparedness plans for the Court.
  • All other job-related duties as assigned.
  • CONTACTS :

    Immediate peers, peers in other departments, immediate supervisor / manager, customers, outside vendor / service providers, court clients, attorneys, law enforcement, court personnel, Tribal and community members.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :

    Position sedentary primarily sitting and lifting a maximum of 10 pounds. Physical factors include constant use of hearing, near / midrange / far vision, depth perception, color / field of vision; frequent standing, walking, sitting, use of smell, driving, typing and occasional carrying, stooping, reaching, manual handling and bending. Working conditions include occasional exposure to weather, wet / humidity, noise, and air quality. Potential hazards include frequent client contact, computer and equipment use and occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts, chemicals, infectious exposure, and equipment. Protective equipment / clothing needed to perform the job includes gloves, goggles and other safety equipment used when engaging in community service events.

    REQUIREMENTS :

    Education : High School diploma or GED required. Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice or Human Service-related field preferred.

    Experience : Two years of experience working in criminal justice or human services field required.

    Certification / License : First Aid card and CPR certification required. Must pass Taser certification within 6 months of hire and maintain annual certification. Will be required to undergo and successfully pass a background check. Must maintain a good moral character standing. Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable by the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must comply with annual driver’s license review and insurability standards with the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Will be required to complete and pass pre-employment drug testing.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities : Knowledge of court case processes required. Knowledge of Tribal traditions and culture preferred. Working knowledge of legal documents and terminology preferred. Working knowledge of substance abuse treatment preferred. Knowledge and ability to use office machines, such as calculator, copier, fax, printer and computer required. Must be able to maintain objectivity. Must be able to work in high stress environments and handle difficult situations. Must be able to establish and maintain effective communication with co-workers, supervisors and the general public. Must be able to work extended hours when needed. Must be flexible and available to work various shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays. Must maintain confidentiality. Must comply with the Court Rules of Conduct. Native American preferred.
