The Youth Services Coordinator, under the supervision of the YEA Manager, is responsible for developing, collaborating and implementing direct services for Native American youth from preschool through 12th grade. Services are aligned with the goals of the Youth Education and Activities Program and

aimed at academic improvement, career choices, cultural growth, recreational opportunities, drug, suicide and bullying prevention, and socialization.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)

  • Promotes program activities and recruits participants.
  • Participates in all activities while maintaining supervision over the entire group.
  • Records management of participation for all YEA activities and programs including company vehicle transportation.
  • Responsible for communicating/corresponding with parents and/or teachers regarding student progress on subjects studied in the program or classroom.
  • Enforces program policies and procedures to guide conduct, maintain discipline, and safeguard the health of the students.
  • Teaches appropriate rules, techniques, and skills of all educational, cultural, and recreational activities while maintaining patience, control, and an enjoyable program atmosphere.
  • Provides transportation for program participants in company vehicles as needed.
  • Assists with assessment of youth needs in the community.
  • Researches new and innovative activities that will stimulate participants’ interest and participation through available resources, collaborative efforts, community/school events, and grant opportunities.
  • Creates monthly schedule of program activity and events for site.
  • Creates and manages employee calendars and shares with the YEA Program Manager.
  • Develops activity budgets and submits for approval.
  • Processes and reconciles accounting and purchasing requests as directed by YEA Program Manager.
  • Reviews the bylaws of the Tribal Youth Council (TYC) and updates them as necessary in collaboration with the TYC.
  • Provides guidance and support to youth for the establishment and goal completion consistent with the Youth Council by-laws and the YEA Program goals.
  • Collects and assembles pertinent data of activities to provide the basis for monthly reports, student count, program development, modification, or funding including cross-referencing all Johnson O’ Malley (JOM) eligible students with school attendance, according to the annual JOM student count requirement.
  • Tracks and monitors the progress of participants in their academic performance, cultural knowledge and social skills.
  • Collaborates with the Title VI Indian Education Program on activities following required federal guidelines.
  • Processes and approves staff time cards and enters staff time in JD Edwards. Assigns specific duties, approves leave time and takes appropriate disciplinary action as necessary.
  • Ensures that all program, health, public safety, facility, and tribal vehicle policies are being enforced.
  • Maintains vehicle records that include insurance, mileage, repairs and service completed.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)

  • Organizes and orders supplies, resources, and sees that facility is kept in a fashion consistent with established policy.
  • Assists with developing and maintaining a schedule for program van maintenance.
  • All other job-related duties as assigned.

CONTACTS:

Immediate peers, peers in other departments, immediate supervisor/manager, managers in other departments, executives, Board of Directors, customers, outside vendors/service providers, superintendents, teachers, paraprofessionals, classroom aids and state and local education agencies.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Position light with lifting of up to 50 pounds or more and frequent lifting/carrying up to 20 pounds or more. Physical factors include constant use of hearing, smell, near/midrange/far vision and field of vision; frequent standing, walking, sitting, use of depth perception and color vision; and occasional carrying/lifting/pushing/pulling/climbing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, reaching, manual handling, driving, typing and bending. Working conditions include occasional exposure to weather, extreme heat and cold, wet/humidity and noise. Potential hazards include constant client contact, frequent computer use and occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts and infectious exposure.

REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Associates Degree or School Certificate in Education, Business, Art Native American Studies or Human Services or three years of demonstrated ability in lieu of degree preferred.

Experience: Minimum of three years’ experience in a youth related field. One-year supervisory experience required in addition to above stated education requirements.

Certification/License: Must obtain Chauffeur’s License within 60 days of hire. Will be required to undergo and successfully pass a background check. Must maintain a good moral character standing. Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable by the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must comply with annual driver license review and insurability standards with the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Will be required to complete and pass pre-employment drug testing.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of Native American History and Traditions preferred. Knowledge of record keeping systems and processes preferred. Knowledge of CPR and First Aid required. Time management skills preferred. Conflict resolution, negotiation and interpersonal skills preferred. Organizational skills preferred. Math, English and reading skills required. Must have working knowledge and be able to use word processing and spreadsheet and database software. Must have excellent public relations/customer service skills and be able to exhibit friendly and positive attitude and establish and maintain effective communication with co-workers, supervisors and guests. Must have excellent communication skills and be able to communicate clearly in person, in writing, and by telephone and email. Must be able to work with minimal to no supervision. Must maintain confidentiality. Native American preferred.
