Saunders Excavation is seeking a highly motivated individual to join our team as a Directional Drill Operator. As the premier utility construction services provider in the western region, we specialize in directional drilling, plowing, trenching, spider plowing, hydro excavation, micro trenching, fast fusion, fiber optics, and general underground utility construction. The Directional Drill Operator will be primarily responsible for the setup and completion of drilling variable sized underground bore holes and pulling back required conduit or pipe. This position requires expertise in locating utilities for horizontal/directional drill rigs and product support equipment. In this role, you will operate a variety of directional drilling equipment, including but not limited to Directional Drills (Vermeer and/or Ditch Witch), Vac Trucks, Mud Trucks, Excavators, Forklifts, and Dump Trucks. You will be tasked with locating utilities for Horizontal Directional Drilling for the installation of underground conduit and fiber optic cable, assisting in potholing and remediation, and setting up equipment including the drill, water tanks, and grounding for the drill. Additionally, you will be responsible for formulating and mixing drilling mud according to site conditions, performing proper reaming and pull back methods, and ensuring compliance with job specifications and company policies. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 3 years of experience operating a directional drill. You will ensure the safety of the public and other underground facilities, oversee laborers and crew members, and maintain equipment to ensure optimal performance and safety. Daily communication with your supervisor to turn in required reports such as bore logs, vehicle maintenance reports, and crew time logs will be essential. This position emphasizes striving for optimal production while maintaining safety and quality work standards.

Responsibilities
- Locate utilities for Horizontal Directional Drill for installation of underground conduit and fiber optic cable.
- Operate Horizontal Directional Drill and other related equipment.
- Assist in potholing and remediation tasks.
- Set up equipment including the drill, water tanks, and grounding for the drill.
- Properly formulate and mix drilling mud for site conditions.
- Perform proper reaming and pull back methods for existing conditions.
- Follow specifications for the job and company policies.
- Ensure safety of the public and other utilities underground facilities.
- Oversee laborers and/or crew members work and monitor time usage.
- Clean and maintain the equipment, check fluid levels, and conduct visual inspections of vehicles/equipment.
- Communicate with Supervisor daily to turn in required reports (i.e. Bore log, vehicle maintenance reports, crew time logs).
- Comply with safety procedures on and off the project site.
Requirements
- Minimum 3 years of experience operating a directional drill (Vermeer and/or Ditch Witch).
- Competent person certificates with MSHA and OSHA preferred.
- Ability to read and comprehend utility locate information.
- Valid Drivers License.
