Summary

Supervise the operation of patient services including Outpatient, Acute, Skilled, Intermediate, Emergency Services, Social Services, Case Management, Education, Specialty Clinic and Surgery.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and /or ability required.

Review and update policy and procedures for Nursing and Emergency Room. Oversee review on Social Services, Case Management, Education, Specialty Clinic, and Surgery books.

Stay up to date on new rules and regulations regarding supervisory areas. Communicate and educate staff regarding all pertinent updates and changes.

Assist Case Manager with keeping current on all patient stay qualifications, as well assisting with decision making of patient qualifications.

Be a member of the Discharge Planning/Care Plan Committee. Meet weekly or as needed to plan for the patients care as inpatients and upon discharge.

Oversee the specialty clinic and surgery department. Assist in recruiting new specialty services and striving to increase surgical procedures conducted at SMC. Assist in educating nursing to staff in new surgical procedures as well as in post-operative care.

See that supplies are ordered from Purchasing as needed. Consult with the Purchasing Agent and C.F.O. on capital equipment needs and place orders when approved.

Meet with patients and/or families to help educate, address concerns, or to resolve problems as needed.

Schedule all nursing department staff for adequate hospital coverage; make modifications to staffing based on patient census. Review time punches, edit time to proper departments and provide feedback and teaching to employees on use of time clock.

Hold monthly staff meetings and maintains records of those minutes.

Maintain standing orders and have them approved at the Medical Staff meeting annually.

Work with all departments of SMC to provide coordinated care and an excellent patient experience.

Keep job descriptions current amongst all areas supervised.

Conduct competency with all clinical staff on an annual basis.

Maintain compliance with Live on Nebraska and assist in keeping those policies and procedures up to date and in accordance with state law.

Be a member of the safety committee. Review all variances for the departments managed by the Director of Nursing. Be responsible for the reporting of any injury of an employee to the Human Resource Department promptly. Keep staff informed of safety regulations.

Assist the Safety Officer and Emergency preparedness coordinator with disaster planning and preparedness, which includes drills.

Be a member of the Quality Management Committee. Be responsible for overseeing all reporters under the Director of Nursing for supervision.

Work closely with the Quality department to maintain high quality of care. This includes quality projects from the Quality Improvement Organization (QIO), the American Hospital Association (AHA), the Nebraska Hospital Association (NHA), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), patient experience, TeamSTEPPS and Just Culture.

Report monthly to the Medical Staff. Get Medical Staff approval of any changes made in standing orders or appropriate nursing procedures.

Review monthly budgetary reports for those departments managed by the Director of Nursing. Assist and C.F.O. in preparing the annual budget.

Interview applicants for supervisory areas after Human Resource screening. Oversee the orientation process to the person's specific duties after his/her general orientation.

Perform yearly staff evaluations and assist staff in developing and attaining goals. Round Quarterly with staff

Participate in all quality, safety, security and infection control programs that are mandatory as well as those required and provided by the department.

Uphold confidentiality and HIPAA compliance at all times and report violations to the Privacy Officer.

Understand and comply with the requirements of the Saunders Medical Center’s Compliance Program, including, but not limited to the Code of Conduct, the Compliance Policy, all Saunders Medical Center-wide policies for compliance, and compliance plans affecting specific duties and responsibilities.

Participate in all education and training programs regarding compliance as required by Saunders Medical Center policy and as requested by the Supervisor.

Other duties as assigned by the Chief Quality Officer.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Supervise all aspects of the following departments: Nursing, Emergency Services, Outpatient Treatment Services, Social Services, Specialty Clinic, Surgery, and Case Management.

Education and/or Experience

Graduation from an accredited Bachelor of Science nursing program.

Five years of experience in acute care nursing required.

Management experience required. Two years preferred.

Computer skills proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.

Certificates Licenses, Registrations

Registered Nurse in the state of Nebraska.

Basic Life Support Certification.

Language Skills

Must be able to read, write and follow written and oral instructions and possess positive skills in communication. Ability to deal tactfully with personnel, patients, visitors, and the general public.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to calculate at the level necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in oral, written, diagram or schedule form.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must stand frequently. The employee must sit, reach with arms and hands and occasionally lift 35 pounds. The employee must occasionally walk and climb or balance.
