- Responsible for inspecting the daily inbound and outbound trains, ensuring the exterior of cars indicates good order for either plant handling or class-1 rail freight
- Prepare necessary written estimates, reports, and forms. These could include bad-order forms, car-repair estimates, and records of billable repairs
- Ensure compliance with all AAR and FRA standards, abide by Savage’s railcar repair quality control program
- Perform “running” repairs on railcars as they exit or enter the facility
- Monitoring all repairs and supplies consumed for accurate inventory and billing to railcar fleet owners
- Use Customer provided software on Savage provided devices to update information about all railcars
- Assist railcar repairmen as inspection and railcar repair volume needs allow
- Work with two-four other crew members to safely perform railcar repairs and movements
- Provide front-line compliance with Operation Clean Sweep and Savage 5S cleanliness and orderliness standards
- Support logistics or admin coordinators in their pursuit of billing for railcar repairs
- 4 years of journeyman experience required
- Background in railcar handling preferred
- Familiarity with removing, repairing, and replacing defective components, including wheels, safety appliances, truck and brake equipment, couplers, yokes, draft gears, and air brake valves
- Complete basic data entry tasks in a computer or logbook to trackthe consumption of parts and the completion of work
- Read, write, and understand English
- Follow written and/or verbal instructions with minimal supervision
- Dependable and shows up on time and prepared to work for scheduled work shifts
- Pass drug/alcohol test / criminal background check required for onboarding
- Railcar repair crews will work both indoors and outdoors every day and, as a result, will be exposed to the elements
- Railcar repairmen must be physically able to do the following:
- Climb on and off railcars and locomotives safely
- Operate railcar hand brakes and switches
- Must have the ability to work, walk, and stand on uneven ballast surfaces for long periods of time – at least 2-3 miles per day of walking can be expected
- Lift up to 75 lbs. without accommodations
- Use hand and power tools proficiently
