Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC) is seeking a Engineer/Scientist - Computational Subsurface Modeler (Geoscience/Engineering) to be based in our Aiken, SC location on the Savannah River Site (SRS).
The Computational Subsurface Modeler develops, implements, and defends radioactive waste disposal and waste tank operational closure actions through management of environmental performance assessment manuscripts containing complex fate and transport models and associated inputs and assumptions, including long-term properties of engineered materials. Interfaces with regulatory stakeholders, facility engineering and operations, and Department of Energy customers.

The Computational Subsurface Modeler develops, implements, and defends radioactive waste disposal and waste tank operational closure actions through management of environmental performance assessment manuscripts containing complex fate and transport models and associated inputs and assumptions, including long-term properties of engineered materials. Interfaces with regulatory stakeholders, facility engineering and operations, and Department of Energy customers.
- Developing defensible arguments supporting the disposal of salt waste at the Saltstone Disposal Facility, the closure of SRS waste tanks and associated ancillary structures, and the SRS Composite Analysis using conceptual and mathematical modeling of the fate of natural and engineered barriers, and the related fate and transport of hazardous chemicals and radionuclides in the environment.
- Providing leadership in the creation and maintenance of environmental performance assessments
- Collaborating with colleagues throughout the DOE Complex regarding environmental performance assessments
- Supporting SRMC contributions on complex technical matters related to environmental performance assessments with the DOE Low-Level Waste Disposal Facility Federal Review Group (LFRG), the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services (SCDES), and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
- Contributing to the fulfillment of project and organizational objectives as a team member dedicated to demonstrating long-term compliance of disposal and closure actions.
- Other duties as assigned
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Geosciences, Computer Science, or other related field from an accredited university or college.
- This position is expected to work a 4/10s (Monday-Thursday) work schedule.
- A security clearance is not required to perform the duties of this position
- This position may support up to 50% telework in accordance with the SRMC Telework Policy (Remote Restricted The employee must remain within the local commuting area - e.g., within 2 hours - of the worksite for business reasons). Teleworking employees may work offsite, typically at home. All teleworking arrangements must be approved at the discretion of Management on a case-by-case basis based on a number of factors, including - without limitation - business need, the nature of the job, employee experience, management preference, and state-by-state legal compliance/requirements.
- Master’s with 3yrs experience; or a Ph.D. degree in Engineering, Geoscience, Computer Science, or other related field from an accredited university or college.
- Familiarity in flow and contaminant transport modeling calculations specifically using PORFLOW and GoldSim.
- Background with legacy Department of Energy defense programs and chemical processes.
- Influential communication, facilitation and collaboration skills to explain, present, and advise senior management and stakeholders who may not have the same technical understanding as demonstrated in presentations to, and participation with, groups such as the Performance and Risk Assessment Community of Practice and the Waste Management Conference.
- Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience with coding quantitatively using Python, MATLAB, R, or Excel.
