Chemist: Radioactive Waste Processing and Characterization, Intermediate

Job Description

The intermediate chemist will contribute to SRNL’s environmental and legacy management mission by applying their chemistry knowledge to accelerate closure of and reduce risk at active cleanup sites for the Department of Energy’s Office of Environmental Management (DOE-EM). The intermediate chemist will be responsible for performing and documenting laboratory applied science experimentation in the field of radioactive and hazardous material processing, stabilization, and characterization to enable nuclear materials processing, site cleanup, and waste disposition across the DOE complex.

The intermediate chemist will coordinate characterization of samples to meet customer requests and may assist with laboratory scale testing using both simulated and radioactive waste tank matrices in support of DOE-EM directives.

Responsibilities

Successful candidates will:

  • Think critically, analyze data, and integrate these skills into effective experimental design, execution, and reporting
  • Interface with SRNL technicians, analytical chemists and site customers to ensure work is completed successfully
  • Possess a good understanding of analytical chemistry methods for characterization of samples.
  • Report results to customers within strict timelines through technical reports and/or presentations
  • May perform hands-on laboratory work scope associated with development or optimization of radioactive waste processing operations across the DOE complex
  • Effectively communicate with colleagues, customers, and management

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS/BA or higher in chemistry, chemical engineering, or closely related field from an accredited college or university
  • BS 4-6 yrs; MS 3-5 yrs; PhD 2-4 yrs research experience in a chemical laboratory
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE security clearance, which requires US Citizenship
  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (e.g. lab coat, safety glasses, gloves) and work in a radiological environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience with process analytical chemistry
  • Previous experience with handling of hazardous and/or radiological materials
