Job Summary
Savannah State University seeks qualified applicants for Communications Officer. This position performs a variety of duties following established guidelines, which promote the safety and well-being of the college community. Dispatches all radio calls; receives and responds to incoming telephone and radio communications; determines the nature of calls and deploys the appropriate emergency and non-emergency personnel and equipment. Provides direction and guidance to callers reporting police, fire or medical emergencies and other incidents; monitors video surveillance; operates two-way radio transmitting equipment to law enforcement personnel. Utilizes and maintains certification for use of the Georgia Crime Information Center ( GCIC ) and National Crime Information Center ( NCIC ) data system which accesses highly confidential information. Performs miscellaneous clerical tasks; maintains required department information/records. Operates Access Control; remotely lock/unlock/grant access for staff and officers. Assists with training and compiling crime statistics. May be directed to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically delineated in this description. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED equivalent required. One year of dispatching experience preferred; or one year of experience working in a fast-paced customer service oriented position. Completion of job related certification program may substitute for experience. No felony conviction or any crime which a maximum term of imprisonment of more than one year may be imposed. No violations of law involving use, possession, delivery, manufacture of a controlled substance, narcotic or dangerous drug. Must be able to complete certification requirements for GCIC / NCIC ; and be able to complete dispatcher training at the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training within the first year of employment. Ability to pass a hearing and vision evaluation to ensure essential functions of the job can be performed effectively. Background and or credit check may be required.
