Job Summary
A certified driver that drives a concrete mixer truck to designated work sites. Most jobs are within a 30 mile radius of the company facility but an employee may be asked to drive as far as 60 miles to reach work sites. Additional duties may be placed on employees such as being asked to operate a front end loader to load aggregate hoppers and to move aggregate materials. Employee may also be asked to load and unload packaged mixing materials such as fibers and expansion joints which involve lifting and carrying bundles weighing between 35 and 50 pounds. The work pace is fast as deliveries are expected to be delivered on time. The pace and demands of the job may create emotional stress for some drivers.
Essential Job Duties / Functions
- Uses provided pre / post trip book to conduct truck inspections including checking fluids such as oil and antifreeze before starting in the morning in accordance with D.O.T. Regulations.
- Fills truck with water by placing rubber hose in tank after backing under plant and prepare drum for concrete.
- Receives delivery ticket.
- Climbs onto truck to add fibers or other products as directed.
- Climbs onto truck to checks each load for consistency of slumps and mix of concrete before leaving the yard.
- Climbs two to three steps and uses handrails to enter the truck cab.
- Operates a control panel to lower rear mounted flow chutes.
- Drives truck in safe manner to arrive at jobs with desired slump.
- Safely backs up or pulls in to jobsites using the aid of a spotter as required. Must be able to maneuver truck in uneven and poor terrain.
- Removes one to three 3 foot extension chutes weighing 70 pounds each from the storage hangers on the side of the truck, one at a time, and carries chute at chest level and attaches chutes to main discharge chute on rear of truck using proper lifting techniques.
- Connects the chute by placing the hooks into the chute slots ensuring that fingers are not near pinch points.
- Mans pour controls personally and unloads concrete in courteous manner.
- Gets tickets signed and assures all needed jobsite information has been collected. Collects cash or check on C.O.D.
- Flushes out drum of truck to remove residual concrete.
- Washes truck with water hose and brush in designated areas per contractors.
- Communicates well with batchman through radio contact that the driver is returning to plant.
- Takes directions from job foreman.
- Completes all paperwork with times, problems on job, and water added.
- Refuels truck every evening and performs WALK AROUND / POST INSPECTION.
- Reports vehicle defects or malfunctions to supervisor.
- Perform other tasks as assigned by supervisors.
- Chips chutes and loading hopper as necessary.
- Keeps interior and exterior of truck clean and free of gravel / concrete build-up.
Physical Requirements

This job is moderately strenuous work. The driver must climb in and out of the truck approximately 50 times per day. The bottom of the seat is approximately 50 inches from the ground. The first step is two feet off the ground, with the second step one foot higher. Usually a bar is provided to help the driver pull himself into the cab.
Each truck has a clutch with five to six gears which the driver must go through for each stop and start procedure when driving. The driver must have coordination between hands and feet to accomplish these procedures. This could average well over 100 times per day. The amount of pressure used in pushing in the clutch with the left leg is around 60 pounds of force.
The driver must also climb a ladder on the back of the truck. This ladder is used not only to check the concrete mix and slump, but to carry things up the ladder to add to the load. This includes 94 pound bags of cement and color. Five gallon jugs of admixtures which weigh 60 pounds must also be carried up the ladder. The driver will climb the ladder an average of three times per hour.
Drivers must pull down the main chute on the truck and attach up to four more chutes at every job. It takes 60 pounds of force to pull the chute down. The chutes are stored on the trucks fenders with straps which take 45 pounds of pressure to free the straps and 60 pounds of lift to lift the chute. The chute weighs up to 60 pounds and must be lifted from the ground to the shoulder when returning the chute to its beginning position.
Drivers must wash and clean their trucks with brushes and a water hose. This requires a fair amount of climbing on the truck.
