About the Rescue:
Saving Sumter’s Strays was founded in 2016 to enhance the rescue program at Sumter Animal Control. Our volunteer-driven organization bridges the gap between shelter life and forever homes. While we are not an open-intake rescue, our primary mission is to support the animals that come through our local animal control shelter. Over the years, our program has expanded to include adoption management, medical care, and other vital support for shelter animals. We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Rescue Coordinator/Shelter Technician to help further our life-saving efforts.
Scope of Work:
The Rescue Coordinator/Shelter Technician will be a key player in networking with rescue organizations and ensuring animals are successfully transferred from our shelter to no-kill rescue partners. This role also involves working in the shelter environment, assisting with daily animal care, adoption processes, and events. All employees will be cross-trained to support various aspects of shelter operations.
Job Responsibilities:
- Rescue Coordination:
- Collaborate with Animal Control staff and volunteers to achieve placement goals for adoptable animals.
- Network with rescue partners and coordinate transfer of animals to no-kill organizations.
- Build and maintain relationships with current and new rescue partners across regions.
- Send out rescue pleas and follow up with rescue partners regarding available animals.
- Animal Care & Shelter Support: As Needed
- Assist with daily tasks such as kennel cleaning, feeding, walking dogs, and grooming.
- Provide hands-on support during medical procedures or when assisting veterinary staff.
- Assist the Adoption Coordinator with meet-and-greet appointments and application processing.
- Ensure animal records in Pet Point are up-to-date.
- Transport & Events: As Needed
- Arrange or assist in driving animals to meet rescue transports as needed.
- Assist in organizing adoption events, fundraising, and other shelter-related activities.
- Volunteer : As Needed
- Review volunteer applications, conduct safety training, and oversee the placement of volunteers in appropriate roles.
- Support volunteers with tasks and assist in maintaining a positive working environment.
Skills and Competencies:
- Excellent customer service and communication skills (written and verbal).
- Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to work independently as well as in a team.
- Comfortable handling timid or fearful animals.
- Proficient in computer use, including managing shelter software.
- Event planning and project management experience are highly valued.
- Willingness to complete various shelter tasks when needed including walking dogs and cleaning kennels.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- 1-year experience in a rescue coordination or leadership role preferred.
- Minimum 1-year experience in animal handling, care, or training is desired.
- A valid driver’s license and insurable driving record are required.
- Veterinary technician experience is a plus but not required.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
- Ability to bend, stoop, stretch, and stand for extended periods.
- Must be able to handle repetitive motions, including leash walking and computer use.
- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, sometimes stressful environment.
- Ability to communicate clearly, both in person and in writing.
