Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Job Description
Position Overview
WisdomWheel is seeking a visionary and dynamic Chief Technology Officer (CTO) to lead the technology strategy for an innovative mobile application designed to revolutionize local exploration, socialization, and community empowerment in the heart of Austin, Texas. The CTO will play a critical role in driving the technology vision, ensuring the technical infrastructure is scalable, and aligning product development with our broader mission of fostering local discovery and meaningful social interaction.
Key Responsibilities
- Technology Strategy & Leadership :
Develop and execute the app's technology strategy, focusing on geolocation services, socialization features, community empowerment, and data privacy. Lead and inspire the technology team to design, build, and scale a seamless, highly interactive mobile app with a strong emphasis on user experience (UX) and performance. Collaborate closely with the product, marketing, and business development teams to ensure technology initiatives align with the overall company vision and user needs. Lead efforts to continuously innovate the app with emerging technologies and trends, including AI, AR / VR, and data analytics.
Oversee the app’s technical architecture, ensuring it is scalable, secure, and robust to handle increasing user traffic, geofencing features, and real-time data. Develop systems to process and analyze geolocation data to enable real-time, location-based interactions. Optimize for performance, ensuring the app is responsive and offers a smooth, lag-free experience in high-demand areas (especially during peak tourism and event periods).
Recruit, mentor, and manage a high-performing technology team of engineers, developers, data scientists, and UX / UI designers. Foster a collaborative and innovative work environment that encourages problem-solving and technical excellence. Oversee the agile development lifecycle, including sprint planning, deployment, and feature testing.
Ensure user data privacy and compliance with applicable regulations (e.g., GDPR, CCPA) while implementing geofencing and data collection features. Develop and maintain data security protocols to protect sensitive location-based and personal data.
Oversee the design and implementation of advanced geofencing technology, ensuring accurate, real-time user location tracking and geo-triggered notifications. Innovate new ways for users to interact with local businesses, events, and experiences based on proximity.
Ensure the mobile app’s user interface is intuitive, visually appealing, and optimized for both iOS and Android platforms. Work with the product team to build engaging, user-centric features that encourage local exploration and social interaction. Foster an agile approach to design, allowing for iterative testing and feedback loops to refine the user experience continuously.
Collaborate with the business development team to identify and implement revenue-generating opportunities, including in-app advertising, sponsored content, and subscription models. Leverage technology to optimize the app for revenue streams tied to local businesses, events, and affiliate partnerships.
Establish relationships with third-party vendors, service providers, and partners to integrate services like ticketing, location-based promotions, and tourism guides into the app. Identify strategic partnerships with local businesses, tourism boards, event organizers, and other stakeholders to enrich the app’s content and offerings.
Oversee the ongoing maintenance, updates, and troubleshooting of the app to ensure uptime and reliability. Implement monitoring tools to track app performance, user engagement, and bug reports. Ensure continuous improvement of the app through regular updates, new features, and optimizations.
Required Skills & Qualifications
5 years of experience in technology leadership roles, with at least 3 years in a CTO, VP of Engineering, or senior technical leadership position. Strong experience in building scalable, high-performance mobile applications, ideally with experience in location-based services (LBS) or geofencing technologies. Proven track record of leading and growing engineering teams in fast-paced environments, ideally in mobile app development or consumer tech.
Extensive experience with mobile app development (iOS and Android) and technologies such as React Native, Swift, Kotlin, or Flutter. Strong proficiency in backend technologies and cloud infrastructure (e.g., AWS, Google Cloud, Firebase, Node.js, Python). In-depth understanding of geolocation services, geofencing, APIs, GPS, and real-time data processing. Familiarity with data security, user privacy protocols, and compliance with industry regulations (GDPR, CCPA). Experience with data analytics, AI / ML, and cloud-native architectures is a plus.
Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate, guide, and manage cross-functional teams. Excellent communication skills, both technical and non-technical, with the ability to convey complex ideas clearly to stakeholders. A strategic thinker who can translate business goals into actionable technology solutions. Problem-solving mindset with a passion for innovation, scalability, and continuous improvement.
