Position Purpose
Under the general supervision of the building principal, to facilitate student success and growth in academic and interpersonal skills through implementing district and state approved curriculum; documenting teaching and student progress/activities/outcomes; addressing specific educational needs of individual students by creating a flexible, safe and optimal learning environment at school; and providing feedback to students, parents and administration regarding student progress, expectations and goals.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS:
Provide instruction to students in accordance with each student's individualized education program.
Develop lesson plans and instructional materials and provide individualized and small group on-site instruction to meet the needs of each student.
Sets specific objectives wherever possible in lesson preparation and weekly lesson plans and carries through presentation to effectively achieve these objectives.
Works cooperatively with regular education teaching staff to coordinate instructional activities and to monitor the progress of each student and provide support instruction in the regular classroom or resource center as assigned.
Maintain records of student's educational progress in class record books and/or board approved forms and summarize these marks for reporting purposes.
Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to achieve a classroom climate conducive to learning.
Consults with members of the student assistance team regarding each student's educational program, academic program and personal growth. Meet at least once annually with the case manager, parents and other professional staff to review and revise the individualized education program and placement of each assigned student.
Communicate with parents through conferences and other means to inform them about the school program and to discuss student progress.
Participate in the development of the district's plan for special education.
Maintain professional competence and continuous improvement through inservice education and other professional growth activities.
Participate in school-level planning, faculty meetings/committees and other school system groups.
Make effective use of community resources to enhance the instructional program.
Perform other duties within the scope of his/her employment and certification as may be assigned.
ABILITY TO:
Evaluate critically the educational achievements of students and to give assignments according to their interests and ability.
Prepare lesson plans and organize a meaningful instructional program.
Prepare examinations to test the attainment of students.
Interpret and analyze data.
Maintain records and prepare reports and correspondence related to the work.
Communicate effectively with others.
Maintain favorable public relations.
