Job Title: Middle School English Learner (EL) Teacher
Reports To: Building Principal

Position Overview

The Middle School English Learner (EL) Teacher supports the academic, linguistic, and cultural needs of English Learners (ELs) by providing targeted instruction to help them achieve English proficiency and succeed in the general education curriculum. This role includes assessing students, developing individualized instructional plans, and collaborating with staff and families to foster an inclusive and equitable learning environment.


Key Responsibilities

  1. Instruction and Support

    • Plan and deliver engaging, differentiated instruction to support English language development in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
    • Use research-based instructional strategies to meet students’ language proficiency levels and academic needs.
    • Provide both pull-out and push-in services, collaborating with classroom teachers to support ELs in mainstream settings.
  2. Assessment and Monitoring

    • Assess and monitor student progress using district-approved language proficiency assessments (e.g., WIDA).
    • Use assessment data to guide instruction, develop Individual Language Development Plans (ILDPs), and provide timely feedback to students and families.
  3. Collaboration and Professional Development

    • Partner with classroom teachers to implement language acquisition strategies and accommodations in the general education classroom.
    • Serve as a resource to staff, providing training and guidance on best practices for supporting ELs.
    • Communicate regularly with families, respecting cultural and linguistic diversity, and fostering positive relationships.
  4. Compliance and Reporting

    • Maintain accurate records and comply with state and federal guidelines for EL programs, including the preparation of required documentation and reports.
    • Participate in IEP or 504 meetings for EL students, providing input to support their language and academic development.
  5. Student Advocacy

    • Advocate for equitable access to educational opportunities and resources for EL students.
    • Promote cultural awareness and sensitivity within the school community.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Education, TESOL, or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Licensure: Valid state teaching license with an English as a Second Language (ESL) or English Learner (EL) endorsement.
  • Experience: Prior teaching experience with EL students in an elementary or middle school setting preferred.
  • Skills:
    • Strong knowledge of second language acquisition theory and instructional practices.
    • Ability to use technology effectively to support instruction and communication.
    • Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
