What you will do:
Nexus is the connection between a taxpayer and the state taxing authority. As a Nexus Auditor, you will examine taxpayer activities (person, property, or transaction) to determine if there’s a tax filing requirement in our state.
Primary job duties include:
- Identifying, contacting, and responding to non-resident filers who may have Corporate Income and Sales/Use Tax nexus within South Carolina.
- Reviewing questionnaires submitted by taxpayers to determine whether a filing requirement exists.
- Preparing nexus assessment letters by obtaining returns or data to prepare the assessment.
- Performing research through court cases and other legal precedents to respond to technical inquiries from attorneys, CPAs, or taxpayers involving nexus issues.
- Managing case loads in a timely manner.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
Either:
- A bachelor’s degree and two years of professional experience in accounting, auditing, finance, insurance, or tax preparation and/or analysis. OR
- A bachelor’s degree and one year of experience in accounting, auditing, finance, insurance, or tax preparation and/or analysis with 12 hours of accounting.

Academic degrees must be from an accredited institution of higher learning.
Preferred Qualifications
- Four years of experience with a minimum of 12 semester hours in accounting or auditing subjects.
- Two years of experience with a minimum of 12 semester hours in accounting or auditing subjects and a masters in Accountancy or Taxation, a Law Degree, or a CPA license.
- Extensive knowledge of tax law, regulations, SCDOR policies and procedures and legal research and techniques.
- Ability to confer, deal and negotiate effectively with taxpayers, their attorneys, CPAs or other representatives.
