SC Steel, LLC was established January 2, 2018, as a subsidiary of FabSouth and acquired the assets of SMI-Owen Steel Company, Inc. on April 1, 2018. SMI-Owen Steel Company had owned the business since 1994 when they acquired it from South Carolina Steel Company. The Upstate South Carolina facility has been in operation at this location since 1952.
Job Overview
We are looking for a motivated and detail-oriented EHS Manager for the structural steel fabrication plant. This team member will lead the efforts to create a safe workplace through implementing programs, monitoring activities, training personnel, investigating events, and reporting to management and governmental agencies.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Meet safety goals for RIR, LTIR, and DART
- Design & Implement
o Manage, design, implement and coordinate safety plan.
o Design and implement health and environmental processes.
o Schedule annual testing for safety/health programs.
o Recommend tools for tracking and managing EHS records. - Monitor
o Monitor safety programs and policies to track effectiveness.
o Conduct Shop inspections and regular audits
o Conduct safety committee meetings in coordination with Plant Manager.
o Exposure and hazard analysis.
o Conduct hearing and air quality surveys periodically.
o Analyze data to improve environmental, health and safety programs. - Train
o Implement training programs to reduce accidents, injuries, and OSHA violations.
o Conduct new hire safety orientations. Ensure all new employees are trained in PPE and company safety policies.
o Conduct safety training and certification courses. - Investigate & Report
o Accident and Near Miss investigation, follow-up, review and assistance.
o Maintain thorough record keeping of employee training and safety compliance.
o Handle all OSHA inspections/responses and record keeping.
o Primary contact for SC DES reporting, inspections and responses.
o Maintain OSHA logs.
o Report to government agencies on environmental, safety, and health results. - Follow up
o Monitor effectiveness of corrective actions.
o Monitor care of injured employees.
o Monitor workers compensation claims through insurance company. - Consult
o Provide support for project management staff at job sites.
Desired Traits
- Working knowledge of computers and computer software, including Microsoft Office applications
- Possess teaching and training skills to perform one-on-one and group training.
- Able to motivate and inspire employees to work within a team environment.
Education/Training/Experience
- Bachelor of Science degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health Science or Industrial Hygiene from an accredited university preferred.
- Professional certification in safety such as CSP or CIH desirable.
- OSHA 500/501 certification preferred
- 5 years of relevant work experience
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, training and analytical skills
- Bilingual (Spanish and English) preferred
