Position Title: Media Relations Coordinator/Staff Copywriter (Hybrid)
Reporting to: Director of Creative Strategies & Communications
Location: Poughkeepsie, NY

Mission of Position: This role is responsible for educating and engaging existing and potential Scenic Hudson audiences through powerful editorial content, outreach to media sources, pitching stories, and coverage of Scenic Hudson initiatives, and institutional copywriting. This will include a broad range of written copy for print and digital media across various channels in order to support the activities of Scenic Hudson’s programs and advance the organization’s mission.
Principal responsibilities may include:
- Draft press releases and media advisories to promote Scenic Hudson’s initiatives.
- Develop media pitches, maintain relationships with journalists, and manage media correspondence.
- Write op-eds, letters to the editor, talking points, and quotes for the President and Executive Team.
- Conceive, research, outline, and write compelling stories and articles for Scenic Hudson’s online collaborative community magazine, HV Viewfinder.
- Utilize editorial freelancers to develop educational and informational series content
- Write copy for website project updates
- Write and revise Scenic Hudson’s Annual Report.
- Develop event materials, including e-blasts, flyers, and signage, for information sessions and other events
- Draft materials for events, information sessions, and other public gatherings (e.g., copy for e-blasts, flyers, signage)
- Research and write copy for park informational kiosks and signage. Assist in creating advocacy campaign toolkits for external supporters on key environmental issues.
- Edit reports, white papers, and sign-on letters for advocacy campaigns as needed
- Write and update text for fundraising portfolios and presentation modules for President and other program staff as needed
- Write various memos about communications work as needed
- Proofread institutional materials across various departments to ensure consistency and accuracy.
- Adapt and tailor requested social media posts for the President’s LinkedIn and Facebook platforms.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director and Senior Vice President
Qualifications
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum of five years of experience in media outreach and compelling copywriting, with a focus on advocacy-driven communications.
- Proven track record of creating and pitching content that secures local and national media coverage, particularly in the environmental, advocacy, or nonprofit sectors.
- Strong ability to write persuasively to mobilize public support, influence policy discussions, and drive action on advocacy-related issues through strategic storytelling.
- Experience in adapting tone and technique across various audiences and communications channels, including traditional media, email campaigns, social media, and digital content.
- Experience producing and pitching engaging copy for a variety of projects, including:
- Press releases and media relations
- Op-eds, advocacy campaigns, and thought leadership pieces
- Digital content for websites, email campaigns, and social media
- Magazine articles and newsletters
- Park signage and kiosks
- Annual reports, presentations, letters, and memos
- Strong organizational skills, with the ability to juggle multiple high-priority projects, manage shifting deadlines, and incorporate feedback from multiple stakeholders.
- Familiarity with environmental issues, advocacy strategies, and media markets related to conservation, climate, and sustainability.
Compensation: Full Time, with competitive benefits and a salary range of: $84,000 - $90,600
