Optician Apprentice

Hiring Range $20.66 to $26.86

Pay Range $20.66 to $29.96

Summary of Job Responsibilities :

The Southcentral Foundation (SCF) Optician is responsible for dispensing opticianry services in support of the Optometry program and serves as an Optometric Assistant to facilitate the provision of clinical Optometric care to customer-owners.

The Optician position has two (2) job levels. Progression from Optician Apprentice to Optician is required and must be attained within one (1) year or within four (4) ABO exam cycles following completion of 1800 hours as an Apprentice.

Outline of Essential Job Responsibilities / Functions to Include but Not Limited to :

Customer Care and Relationships :

1. Creates, develops and nurtures culturally appropriate interactions and connections with each other, customer-owners, and the community.

2. Provides dispensing services to customer-owners determining appropriate lens and types, ordering, and assisting with educating client in the use of glasses / contact lens :

  • Neutralizes customer-owner's glasses with lensometer and records in appropriate format. Measures and records customer-owner's interpupillary distances. Measures vertex distances as required.
  • Determines lens centration, bifocal / multifocal / PAL height and inset and specifications for all lens finishes / treatments.
  • Advises customer-owners on availability of lens material and type. Assists customer-owners with frame selection / styling and determines appropriate frame specifications.
  • Records all job information on order form. Order frames from supplier when required. Enters and drops eyeglass orders in EHR and forwards job orders to the optical laboratory for fabrication.
  • Tracks job orders.
  • Verifies glasses prior to dispensing. Notifies customer-owners when glasses are available for dispensing. Prepares glasses for shipment by mail.
  • Dispenses, adjusts, and makes minor repairs to glasses and teaches customer-owners how to care for them.

3. Prepares customer-owner record and performs preliminary tests prior to customer-owner appointments.

4. Accompanies an eye care provider to rural communities to provide Opticianry services and Optometric Assistant support during field clinics, as required.

3. Applies knowledge of the Privacy Act of 1974 and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) to ensure the privacy of individuals is protected to the fullest.

4. Orders display materials and maintains displays and work area :

  • Maintains a neat, orderly, and attractive dispensary.
  • Maintains frame and accessory displays by monitoring frame and accessory inventory.
  • Meets with frame company representatives.
  • Initiates stock ordering. Rotates and exchanges stock items as required. Stores and safeguards stock upon receipt.
  • Monitors customer-owner and visitor activity throughout the clinic facility to minimize theft, damage, and disruptive behavior.
  • 5. Applies knowledge of "duty to warn" requirements.

    6. Understands basic medical terminology related to customer-owner treatment in the clinic and common ocular surgery.

    7. Applies knowledge of American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standards for prescription ophthalmic lenses, both street wear and industrial safety eyewear.

    8. Applies knowledge of clinic policies and procedures for appointments, walk-in customer-owners, and follow-up.

    9. Maintains quality, safety, and infection control standards.

    10. Applies knowledge of clinically applicable ophthalmic optics, the conventions of optical prescription writing, and optical transposition.

    11. Makes decisions independently and efficiently.

    12. Demonstrates proficiency in using a lensometer, frame warmer, and ophthalmic hand tools.

    13. Applies in depth knowledge of spectacle fabrication procedures; spectacle lens powers, base curves, and availability ranges; multifocal / PAL styles, specifications, and availability ranges; and spectacle lens materials, treatment options and availability.

    Qualifications :

    SCF programs are established to serve a primary population comprised of Alaska Native people who are affiliated with Cook Inlet Region, Inc. (CIRI) and Alaska Native and American Indian people within SCF's geographical service area. Employees should have a thorough understanding of the cultures and the needs of this population. Such knowledge is critical to ensure the achievement of SCF's vision of a Native Community that enjoys physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wellness, and mission of working together with the Native Community to achieve wellness through health and related services :

    1. High School diploma; OR GED.

    2. Licensed as a Dispensing Optician Apprentice in the State of Alaska; OR become licensed within two (2) months of hire as a Dispensing Optician Apprentice.

    3. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required. ACLS, NRP, ATLS, ALSO and PALS as required for specialty and any certification relating to the scope of practice as required.

    Additional Qualifications for Dispensing Optician : Meets all requirements of Apprentice Optician in addition to the following :

    1. Licensed as an Optician in the State of Alaska within one (1) year of being a licensed Dispensing Optician Apprentice or within four (4) ABO exam cycles following completion of 1800 hours as an Apprentice.

Jobs designated as a Health Care Personnel (HCP) position, requires that you have documentation that you have completed the following immunizations prior to your first day of employment : MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella), Varicella (Chicken Pox), Hepatitis B, Influenza, T-dap (Tetanus - Diphtheria - Pertussis), and COVID-19.
