What are the responsibilities and job description for the Local Delivery Driver (Class A CDL required) position at Scherer Bros?
POSITION SUMMARY: Deliver, load/unload, and pick up building materials as
scheduled by the Dispatcher. Regular and reliable attendance is an
essential function of this job.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Safely Drive Truck (Standard Transmission, Air Brakes)
- Determine best route for delivery considering weather, time, equipment and road conditions
- Perform required pre and post-trip vehicle inspection’s and complete required paperwork
- Monitor truck operations
Customer Service
- Represent SBL in a positive and professional manner while at delivery sites and while driving on the public roadway
- Address general concerns or questions from customers and homeowners
Load Truck
- Select materials from yard, millwork and hardware
- Ensure load is complete
- Notify dispatch of any shortages or Back Orders
- Safely load/secure items onto truck with forklift assistance (Some hand loading required)
Unload Truck
- Determine proper approach of delivery considering weather, site, equipment,
and customer requests
- Safely unload building materials at jobsite (some hand/manual unloading required)
Pick up Returns
- Safely load and secure returning items onto truck
- Label returns correctly when unloading in the Yard
Safety and Wellness
- Offer suggestions to continually increase knowledge and awareness of Safety
- Computer Based Courses (CBT) completed as assigned
- Proper use of all PPE’s at all times and in all circumstances
- Operate equipment and tools according to established safety standards and regulations and only after being trained
- Support and promote safety and wellness initiatives
- Report all safety concerns, hazards and incidents
- Follow ergonomically correct standards in the workplace
- Housekeeping
Continuous Improvement
- Support Continuous Improvement initiatives; follow Standard work as it applies to your work area and job functions
- Provide and seek input from your own team to identify process improvement opportunities
- Assist with identification of customer service issues and ideas for improvement
- Follow standard work documented process for changing standard work
- Participate in 5S events and sustain improvements in your assigned area
- Support and promote Continuous Improvement Incentives within your area
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Scan deliveries that have been delivered phone for DDS.
- Take pictures of deliveries and returns. Send them to Dispatch / DDS via phone.
- Responsible for DOT Health Card Renewal
- Successfully complete required Safety Training as needed
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- High School Diploma or GED preferred
- Class “A” driver’s license required
- 3 years previous driving experience required
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Willingness to train and operate Boom Truck, Piggy Back forklift, and pull trailers.
- Ability to problem solve and make good judgments that impact customers and SBL
- Knowledge of building materials
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively
- Ability to read, write and calculate tickets and credit memos.
- Safety oriented.
- Familiar with Twin Cities area and roadways
- Ability to read a map and plan delivery route to maximize efficiency
- Knowledge of Federal Department of Transportation Regulations
- Ability to adapt quickly and be flexible to changes in the environment, delivery orders, traffic, and customer needs
- Knowledge of DDS (Dispatch & Delivery System)
ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Exposed to extreme weather conditions
- Exposed to mechanical equipment
- Majority of day is spent driving truck to and from job sites
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Lift/carry 50 - 75 lbs. (100 lbs. occasionally)
- Twist, bend, stoop, squat to floor level
- Reach overhead to grasp materials
- Prolonged sitting – driving
- Must be able to pass random and required Drug and Alcohol Tests
LICENSE(S) AND/OR CERTIFICATE(S):
- Valid Commercial Class A Driver’s license w/ acceptable driving record
- Possess current DOT Health Card or ability to pass DOT physical
(Responsible for DOT renewal)
- Forklift certification required or ability to obtain certification
