Job Description
Job Description
Schnabel is a leader in specialty design-build underground construction. We are looking for a Design Engineer to provide support for our operations and preconstruction teams designing buildable and cost-effective solutions for geostructural scopes of work.
Schnabel was founded in 1959 in Washington DC and has grown to become one of the nation’s top geostructural contractors. We are family owned and operated with a focus on safety, quality of work, and growth. With a national footprint it’s sometimes difficult to maintain the small company feel, but we’ve been successful in preserving that part of our culture. Not only will you have innovative and bright leaders, but you will also be set up for your own development with Schnabel’s training roadmap. Our internal training program is setup to grow your skills and knowledge with our work.
This role reports directly to the Regional Vice President and other leadership as necessary.
Our typical scope of work includes installation of soldier piles, micropiles, lagging, walers, tiebacks, and braces for support of excavation projects. We also take on challenging projects with underpinning, grouting, tunneling, and unique structural support as part of our scope. Candidates who have direct construction experience and familiarity with our company’s traditional scope of work are preferred.
Job Responsibilities
- Review project documents including geotechnical exploration reports, project specifications and civil / structural plans for use during design
- Evaluate site conditions and project risks, determine construction methods best suited to the project for ease of construction and risk mitigation
- Use available project data to determine soil properties, perform engineering calculations, and develop designs for both work being performed and work being bid
- Prepare design documents for submittal including shop drawings and design calculations, work plans, reports, and responses to submittals by reviewing parties including redesign or resubmittal of design documents as required
- Respond quickly to submittal review comments and project changes
- Respond quickly to questions from the project team including any conditions that are not in accordance with the design
- Participate in meetings and discussions as required to address project issues related to design and construction
- Prepare other project documents including specifications, means and methods, and testing submittals as required
