POSTED ON 1/27/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 4/24/2025

The Western Fire & Forest Resilience Collaborative Seeks Postdoctoral Associates for labs in California and New York. The Collaborative is engaging 10 science teams and an array of decision makers to co-create and implement a research program that will ensure predictive science of fire ecology and forest resilience can support effective strategies for the wildfire crisis.Details : Forest Futures Lab , Dr. Winslow Hansen, Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, Millbrook, New York. Work offers hybrid attendance. The postdoctoral associate will be responsible for working with a team to project how management strategies, climate change, and wildfires will shape western forests over the next century with state-of-the-art simulation models and / or AI. The successful candidate will find ample opportunities for leadership and to pursue their own ideas.Remote Sensing Ecohydrology Lab , Dr. Alexandra Konings, Stanford University, Palo Alto, CA. Work onsite with potential to become hybrid. University-wide regulations do not allow for fully remote positions. The postdoctoral associate will research live fuel moisture content dynamics in the context of Western US wildfires. Particularly, they will study the effect of fuels management on drought sensitivity of Western US ecosystems via analysis of microwave remote sensing derived live fuel moisture content. There is also opportunity to focus on analyzing the interaction between live fuel moisture content and wildfire and ecological dynamics more broadly, or in SAR-based remote sensing of live fuel moisture.Climate Change & Ecosystems Dynamic Lab , Dr. Lara Kueppers, UC Berkeley, Berkeley, CA. Work onsite with potential to become hybrid. The postdoctoral associate will lead distributed field experiments to examine global change effects on post-fire forest regeneration, and contribute to targeted dynamic vegetation modeling to pinpoint the most important uncertainties for predicting future forest regeneration.Qualifications : A PhD or equivalent in Earth System Science, Ecology, Environmental Science, Geography, Fire Science, Forestry, Plant Physiology, Disturbance Ecology, Ecosystem Modeling, AI or a related field. Background in plant physiology, forest ecology, fire ecology, fire behavior, global change biology, ecosystem science or similar.Coding experience, e.g., in Fortran, C, R, Python, and / or Matlab, and analytical skills, such as experience with GIS and data visualization software.Experience in quantitative modeling or analysis of large datasets, such as tree-ring archives, remotely sensed data products, eddy covariance time-series, or forest inventory time-series.Expertise in dynamic vegetation modeling, forest dynamics modeling, growth chamber or mesocosm experiments, FACE or other manipulative experiments or related areas.Candidates who are excited by team science and who have excellent written and oral communication skills preferred.Compensation : Annual salary ranges depending on experience and work site. Inquire for details. These are full-time, exempt, benefitted positions for one-two years, renewable contingent upon successful performance. Preferred start dates range from August 2024 to January 2025, but are open until filled. To apply : Email a cover letter and CV to wffrc@caryinstitute.org. In your email, please specify the lab(s) you’d like to work with and explain what aspects of the position you are most interested in and why.#J-18808-Ljbffr
