What are the responsibilities and job description for the Middle School Counselor-7th and 8th Grade position at School Administrative Unit 74?
Barrington Middle School is seeking a dedicated, compassionate, and highly skilled Middle School Counselor to support our 7th and 8th grade students. The ideal candidate will be committed to fostering a safe, supportive, and engaging environment that promotes both the academic and emotional well-being of students. This position requires a proactive and collaborative counselor who will work closely with students, families, and staff to provide a comprehensive counseling program focused on personal, social, and academic development.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Masters Degree (Preferred)
New Hampshire Certification as a School Counselor
At least two (2) years of experience as a school counselor
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provides school-based individual and group counseling support to students
- Helps students resolve emotional and social issues that occur with peers, family and school;
- Helps students become adequate in their own decision making and accepting of self;
- Evaluates records of all new students for placement;
- Assists students in the transition to a new school building or to high school;
- Assists students in fulfilling their educational requirements and needs by observing their academic growth.
- Works with groups to supplement individual counseling and to focus on common needs;
- Provides whole class counseling as needs arise and are established by counselor, class, teacher, and/or building principal;
- Provides effective education and vocational exploration within the classroom.
Provides services to school staff
- Consults with teachers/staff about specific students;
- Collaborates in the development of behavior management programs;
- Acts as a consultant to teachers/staff and administrators;
- Actively participates on the placement of students.
- Works cooperatively with the school nurse concerning students with medical/emotional problems, psychosomatic illness, drugs, alcohol, and suicide.
Resource to parents/families:
- Directly contacts and /or responds to parents to discuss personal adjustments and areas of concern.
Acts as a referral agent and coordinator to available outside agencies concerning further counseling or other special needs.
Consults with DCYF, probation, courts, and police liaison where there is evidence of child neglect or abuse.
Acts as a resource to parents. Attends court sessions, when required, to represent the school’s position concerning individual children.
Coordination:
- Collaborates with the Director of Student Services to support students/families experiencing homelessness / home insecurity / families in transition.
- Collaborates with the Special Education Evaluation Placement Team to aid in the evaluation and placement of children with special needs.
- Provides information or speaks to local organizations (i.e. PTA, etc.).
- Attends staff meetings and serves on committees as useful and required. Strives to improve and maintain professional competence.
- Coordinates state level assessments with the support of the Curriculum Coordinator and building administration.
- Coordinates transition to three local high schools.
- Performs other supervisory duties as assigned by the Building Principal.
