DESCRIPTION: Assist special needs for students who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing in a variety of programs. This includes, but is not limited to the following tasks: use of sign language to communicate with students, note taking for students, monitoring support use of DM equipment, orientation of schedule and classroom locations, adaptation of materials to complete assignments, organization of materials, facilitating language acquisition through modeling, questioning and expansion.
SALARY: Classified Grade L, starting at $21.00 depending on relevant experience. 8 hours per day, Tuesday through Friday on a 9-month work schedule, paid over 12 months. Position is eligible for benefits.

Duties And Responsibilities
- Assist students with classroom learning and/or recreational activities. Guide them in their learning expectations, assignments or tasks. Perform tutoring with the use of Sign Language to ensure reinforcement of academic concepts, social and behavioral skills. Help with organization of classroom materials for student. Assist students with adherence to following classroom structures and routines. Support behavior plan implementation.
- Facilitate language acquisition through modeling, questioning and expansion through the use of sign language.
- Assist with students with personal hygiene and care. Assist with students’ physical problems such as suctioning, trachea, tube feeding, diapering, etc. Sanitize, disinfect, and clean the learning environment and general work areas of all bodily fluids.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Duties require cross training in office equipment, computers, communication skills, basic knowledge of child development, basic understanding of various disabilities and behavior management, understanding of the IEP process, and knowledge of health care related to disabled students (e.g., seizures, asthma, etc.), as well as the ability to work with small groups of students with disabilities as well as the ability to work independently. Duties affect individuals within the assigned building.
- High school diploma or equivalent, plus Proficient in Conceptually Accurate Signed English, (CASE)/Pidgeon Signed English, (PSE). Preferred experience in working with children who have Special Needs
- Individual must have some exposure and/or experience working with and/or being around children. Prefer an individual who has 6 months or more experience working with students with disabilities, but not required.Skills, Knowledge and Equipment:
- Must have the ability to speak/read/write in English and interpret documents such as lesson plans, behavior Intervention Plans, IEPs, staff and student handbooks. Individual must be competent in basic academic skills (reading, math, and writing) in order to support students within their academic program. Requires the ability to focus on details in order to collect data, write routine communications, and relay accurate information, work independently, yet be able to take directives and follow through from a variety of special education service providers. Individual must be able to remain professional and calm in stressful situations when dealing with students, staff, and parents. Demonstrated ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables when in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- CPR/AED/First Aid certification preferred at time of hire or obtained within 60 calendar days from date of hire on own time and expense. CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) preferred at time of hire or obtained no less than 60 calendar days from date of hire. Individuals are required to monitor their certifications; therefore, this individual is responsible to ensure they register for their certification course(s) via the SPED Dept. to ensure they are current at all times while in this position. Lack of a valid certification could result in temporary suspension and/or termination.
