Position Overview:
The Substitute School Security Officer (SSO) plays a vital role in supporting the safety and security of students, staff, and visitors on school grounds. This position works under the direction of school administrators and the Safety and Security Coordinator, assisting in implementing policies and procedures to maintain a safe and orderly school environment. The SSO also collaborates with assigned School Resource Officers (SROs) to ensure a secure campus.

Key Responsibilities:

• Ensure safety and security within the assigned school.
• Work closely with the administrative team and SROs to address disruptive situations, emergencies, and crises effectively.
• Patrol and monitor designated areas, including the school building, grounds, and parking lots, to identify and address any violations of laws, district rules, or policies.
• Detect, investigate, and report suspicious activities, unauthorized individuals, or vehicles.
• Supervise and maintain order during hallway transitions between classes.
• Operate and monitor surveillance systems to enhance school security.
• Assist with maintaining a secure and safe environment during breakfast, lunch periods, student arrivals, and dismissals.
• Support fire drills and other emergency evacuation procedures.
• Secure entrances and exits throughout the school day.
• Provide training and mentorship to newly assigned SSOs as needed.
• Uphold and model non-discriminatory practices in all interactions.
• Serve as a trained member of the Medical Emergency Response Team (MERT).

Required Qualifications:

• High School diploma or GED certification.
• 1-3 years of experience in security or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Prior experience working with diverse populations.
• Experience in a school environment.
• NVCI (Nonviolent Crisis Intervention) certification or training.

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to stand and/or walk for extended periods.
• Manual dexterity to operate equipment such as telephones, two-way radios, keyboards, and locks.
• Hearing and speech abilities to clearly communicate in normal and emergency situations.
• Visual acuity to observe and interpret student movements and activities.
