Description
The School District of La Crosse is accepting applications for a 1.0 FTE Deaf and Hard of Hearing Teacher for the District beginning in the 2025-2026 school year. Projected start date: August 15, 2025
Wisconsin certification 1805 is required.
ACCOUNTABILITY OJBECTIVES:
The Teacher of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing is responsible for providing specialized instruction and support to students with hearing loss in an educational setting. The Teacher of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing collaborates with students, teachers, families, and other professionals to develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) and ensure that students with hearing loss have equal access to the curriculum, develop language and communication skills, and achieve their educational goals.
POSITION CHARACTERISTICS:
Recruited by: Director of Student Services or Supervisor of Special Education
Salary: Set annually by the Board of Education/Superintendent
Length of Contract: 189 days
POSITION RELATIONSHIPS:
Reports to: Building Principals, Supervisor of Special Education, and Director of Student Services
Coordinates with: Other special education staff and related services, general education staff, families, and community partners, such as medical professionals, social workers, or others supporting student and family needs relative to the student's hearing impairment.
Supervises: Teacher level supervision and direction of Educational Interpreters

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
A. Required experience and training:
a. Bachelor's or Master's Degree in special education with a specialization in Deaf/Hard of Hearing Education or a related field from an accredited institution.
b. Valid DPI teacher license 1805 - Deaf or Hard of Hearing
c. Understanding of sign language (ASL or other appropriate sign systems) and understanding of various communication modalities used by individuals with hearing loss.
d. Knowledge of hearing loss and its impact on language development and learning.
e. Familiarity with specialized instructional techniques, assessment tools, and assistive technologies used in teacher students with hearing loss.
f. Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with students, parents, teachers, and other professionals.
g. Understanding of special education laws and regulations related to the provision of services for students with hearing loss.
B. Desired experience and training:
a. Experience working as a Teacher of the Deaf/Hard of hearing, preferably in a school-based or educational setting.
b. Use of assistive and adaptive technology to support student independence especially in communication across school environments.
c. Ability to travel between school sites in order to serve student itinerantly.
C. Special requirements for the position:
a. Excellent oral and written communication skills for completing evaluations and IEPs, as well as for leading or particpating in team meetings.
