JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB GOAL:
Supervises a group of bus operators, attendants and aides within an operating area to ensure a coordinated and effective operation of the student transportation network.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in transportation, business, public administration or related field preferred. A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
- Five (5) years demonstrated satisfactory experience in a fleet transportation operation including two (2) years satisfactory experience as a lead person, coordinator, or supervisor, preferably with a large group.
- Demonstrated ability to read and interpret rules, regulations, and laws.
- Demonstrated skills in oral and written communications.
- Demonstrated experience in the use of generally accepted office computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Programs).
- Valid Florida Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), with air brake, passenger and school bus endorsements, or the ability to obtain the license with endorsements within 60 days of being hired.
- A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of geography and bus routes of area served. Knowledge of accepted methods and techniques of safe driving and defensive driving for school bus operators to maintain necessary supporting records. Ability to prepare accurate and informative reports on bus operations and operator, attendants & aide performance. Completion of required first aid and defensive driving courses. Ability to communicate effectively with school personnel, students, parents and the public. Ability to prepare reports and correspondence as required. Knowledge of process and procedures of the Transportation Department regarding payroll data for operators, attendants and aides. Ability to distinguish the significant from the less significant when dealing with the behavior of the students on the bus.
REPORTS TO:
Transportation Operations Specialist
SUPERVISES:
Bus Operators, Attendants and Aides in designated area.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Supervises a group of bus operators, attendants and aides within an operating area and oversee on time performance.
- Makes retain/release decisions on probationary drivers assigned to the group in consultation with the Director of Transportation, prior to the conclusion of the probationary period.
- Counsels bus operators, attendants & aides in all areas of job performance, documents for evaluation purposes, and carries out discipline measures appropriate to level of management.
- Evaluates bus operators, attendants & aides assigned to the group. May provide input to other Area Coordinators relevant to evaluation of their assigned group.
- Facilitates the resolution of student discipline and safety problems with operators, schools, safety personnel, parents and upper management to ensure quality customer service.
- Provides assistance to safety & training personnel in the completion of their duties.
- Cooperates with the vehicle maintenance department to ensure all required inspection schedules are completed in a timely fashion, while ensuring enough buses are available to complete assigned work.
- Applies knowledge of State and Federal laws and regulations, and State and local school board rules and regulations to daily bus operations to ensure regulatory compliance.
- Meets with parents, school based administrators, students, and the public to coordinate transportation efforts and resolve transportation related issues/problems.
- Prepares and maintains records required to manage regulatory, legal and personnel functions.
- Exercises discretion and independent judgment.
- Drives school bus as needed.
- Interviews/hires perspective bus operators/attendants.
- Performs other duties as required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to climb stairs, walk distances required, lift student weight up to 40 lbs. and evacuate students from the school bus in an emergency.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the District’s approved compensation plan. Length of work year is twelve months; daily work hours are flexible, and consistent with those established by the District.

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of personnel.
