State Title: Specialist/Manager, Pupil Personnel Services
JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB GOAL:
To provide career and educational advice to participants and work closely with CareerSource Suncoast for positive performance and placement of students.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree or four year’s experience at a technical institute or college in area related to student services and/or activities.
- Minimum of three (3) years successful work experience in teaching, counseling, or a related field.
- Prior experience in career/technical education helpful.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Positive interpersonal skills. Skill in motivating and engaging students. Effective communication skills (written and oral). Basic Computer skills. Ability to organize, prioritize, and manage time well. Good listening skills. Ability to manage large groups. Demonstrated proactive orientation. Knowledge of career information, career inventories, and programs available at the Manatee Technical College (MTC). Knowledge of the characteristics and needs of students served. Knowledge and ability to use principles of guidance and counseling. Ability to work effectively with diverse student populations, the administration and staff at MTC.
REPORTS TO:
Director of Manatee Technical College or designee
SUPERVISES:
Assigned clerical/secretarial support personnel.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Recruit potential students.
- Develop strategies for student retention.
- Serve as liaison between CareerSource Suncoast and MTC to facilitate for students for wages and the Workforce Investment Act Program.
- Advise students regarding various services and resources at MTC.
- Visit Manatee County Schools to promote programs at MTC as appropriate.
- Administer career interest inventories to students and interpret results.
- Use test data, career interest inventories, and other student information to advise students about course/program selections.
- Interact with instructors about student performance.
- Document services to students.
- Provide career interest information through conferences, printed materials, job shadowing, and other appropriate activities.
- Support students in work based experiences.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters.
- Meet and deal effectively with the general public, staff members, students, parents, administrators and other contact persons using tact and good judgment.
- Exhibit interpersonal skills to work as an effective team member.
- Model and maintain high ethical standards.
- Represent the school/District in a positive and professional manner.
- Keep supervisor informed of potential problems or unusual events.
- Follow federal and state laws as well as School Board policies, rules and regulations.
- Prepare all required reports and maintain all appropriate records.
- Maintain expertise in assigned area to fulfill project goals and objectives.
- Perform other tasks consistent with the goals and objectives of this position.
- Support MTC activities including recruitment, retention, guidance, dropout prevention, health services, attendance, grading, testing, vocational/CTE certification, and other related areas.
- Cooperate with and support procedures for participation in school accreditation and monitor accreditation standards at MTC.
- Participate in District, MTC and Department meetings and other activities to enhance professional development.
- Attend MTC-related activities and events including, but not limited to, graduation ceremonies, Skills USA activities, and other related vocational/CTE or instructional activities.
- Attend and participate in staff meetings to discuss policy changes, instructional programs, potential problems, and resolution of existing problems.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force as needed to move objects.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the District’s approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the District.

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of personnel.
