JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Establishes the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by the coaching staff.
- Manages and supervises athletic activities, contests, and practice sessions to promote individual growth in athletic skills, teamwork, discipline, respect, and good sportsmanship.
- Establishes performance criteria for competition and evaluates students’ athletic abilities initially and on a regular basis (i.e., statistics, film, challenge matches, etc.).
- Determines game strategy based on the teams’ capabilities.
- Follows district, school, and WIAA rules and regulations.
- Instructs and advises students on WIAA rules and regulations.
- Advises students and parents on athletic code of conduct, including consequences for violation, and coordinates with the Director of Athletics and Activities in instances of possible violations of the code of conduct.
- Promotes the weight training program Spartan Strength & Fitness both in and out of season.
- Takes all necessary precautions to protect student athletes, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Supports student participation in other School District of Superior activities and communicates with colleagues regarding expectations in and out of season.
- Plans practices and competitions following exemplary standards established by the specific sport.
- Works within the established budget for the program under direction of the Director of Athletics and Activities.
- Accompanies and supervises student athletes during athletic competitions in assigned sports on out-of-town trips.
- Works with the athletic department to schedule competitions and coordinate arrangements (i.e., facilities, busing, camps, special events, etc.).
- Applies and enforces student discipline during athletic contests and encourages sportsmanlike conduct in all phases of athletic participation.
- Monitors the academic performance of team members to ensure that eligibility requirements are met; and encourages student athletes to maintain a high academic standard.
- Establishes and maintains open, professional, and respectful communications with students, parents, teachers, athletic director, and youth feeder coaches.
- Conferences with parents/guardians, as necessary, regarding the athletic performance of their student or other issues such as behavioral or academic.
- Attends monthly coach meetings and other professional activities and training.
- Models sportsman-like behavior and maintains appropriate conduct towards players, officials, and spectators.
- Participates in fundraising programs as needed and work within established budgets.
- Follows injury procedures established by the Superior Athletic Department.
- Maintains inventory of all uniforms and equipment within the specific sport/program.
- Participates in special activities to include parent’s night, banquets, award nights, and pep assemblies.
- Maintains all student-athlete personal and medical files, and pertinent school district materials, eligibility forms, transfer forms, grade reports, and ensures that district guidelines are followed.
- Annually establishes and meets performance goals.
- Adheres to the Coaches Handbook and school board policies, particularly those governing student nondiscrimination, anti-harassment, bullying, mandatory reporting, student record confidentiality, and other pertinent school board policies.
- All other duties assigned by Administration.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Valid Teaching License from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) or completion of the WIAA coaching fundamentals course within the first (1st) year of coaching.
- Valid CPR/AED/First Aid Certification within the first (1st) year of coaching.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Knowledge of WIAA/Conference rules.
- Previous coaching experience.
