Reports to: School Nutrition Supervisor / School Nutrition Director Terms of Employment: Full-Time

Salary: Monthly

Status: 12 Month / Exempt / (Works 8hrs – 40hrs/week)

 

GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

 

A School Nutrition Manager performs supervisory and administrative tasks directly related to the day to day operations in the school cafeteria with limited supervision. This employee must exercise considerable independent judgement and initiative in planning, developing, coordinating, overseeing physical/human resources needed to effectively prepare and serve nutritious meals to our students and staff. School Nutrition Managers are responsible for ordering/maintaining appropriate food/supply inventories, recording purchases, food production, program participation/revenues and following the Federal/USDA, State and Local regulations and guidelines for all of the School Nutrition Programs that the school district is currently operating. It is also the expectation of the School Nutrition Director that the School Nutrition Manager be responsible for the developing and supervising a team of skilled and professional cafeteria staff including all of the routine personnel administration functions.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Cleans cafeteria equipment including refrigerator, dishwasher, oven hood, and racks; maintains clean service and storage areas; defrosts, cleans, and fills milk boxes; unloads, loads and operates dishwasher; maintains clean dish room and stores clean equipment and utensils; washes, dries, and folds dish towels; cleans dining room counter tops, tables, and chairs after each meal; sweeps and mops food preparation area and dish room floors; empties dining room trash containers and disposes of trash; cleans and fills napkin, silverware, and condiment holders; assists cook in preparing and serving food portions; assists in storing food deliveries in proper places; prepares and sets out cups and plates for meals; lifts and carries food cartons, milk bags, garbage bags, and serving containers.

MINIMUM TRAINING, EXPERIENCE AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • High School diploma or GED / 5 years of experience in School Nutrition is preferred / Supervisory experience is preferred
  • Completion of Institute of Child Nutrition Certification within 90 days of start
  • Maintains required Food Safety Certification
  • Attend and actively participate in all job-related training classes / workshops
  • Follow required standards of food safety and HACCP in storing and serving
  • Experience in quantity food preparation preferred
  • Food preparation and standards of sanitation and safety
  • Manages and maintains inventory in all storage
  • Monitors and maintains Health and Fire Department inspection reports for the cafeteria and resolves identified deficiencies to remain in compliance.
  • Oversees and monitors the use of all kitchen equipment
  • Simple arithmetic, reading skills, and recipe preparation
  • Ability to perceive size and serve standard portions on a consistent basis
  • Cooking skills to prepare food in a safe and attractive way
  • Follow daily production plans and complete production sheets prior to each day’s departure
  • Coordinating skills to maintain records of food products used and money received from students
  • Administrative skills to direct daily operation of cafeteria in manager’s absence
  • Communication skills to communicate effectively with students, staff and parents
  • Manual skills for cleaning and sanitizing food preparation equipment

 

  • Mechanical skills to safely operate kitchen equipment
  • Planning skills in forecasting cooking time
  • Common arithmetical skills in counting money for deposit and measurements in recipes
  • Software/word processing skills to operate computer to record customer accounts and to possibly assist director with daily, weekly, monthly and yearly reports
  • Communicates in a positive manner with students, staff, parents, outside vendors and co-workers
  • Must wear the appropriate clean uniform and shoes as designated by the School Nutrition Director

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

 

  • Work is performed in a school kitchen environment where temperatures from hot ovens, steamers, and dishwashers can cause discomfort
  • Noise from students and kitchen equipment can be excessive
  • Injuries from kitchen equipment are possible; safety rules, training and protective equipment are required
  • Considerable responsibilities for the safety of others by assuring meals are prepared in a safe and sanitary manner

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

 

  • Work involves sustained standing and frequent lifting
  • Medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects
  • Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
