JOB DESCRIPTION

OFFICIAL TITLE:                    Emergency Response Team School Resource Officer 

 

SUPERVISOR:                         Chief of the RCSS Police Department 

 

SALARY RANGE:                    In accordance with RCSS Salary Schedules

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:      Work Year - 12 month

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:

 

Provides security and take appropriate action to prevent injury to students, employees and visitors while on or in Board of Education property or facility.  Provides reports to Principal and Captain of the Richmond County School System Police Department  as requested. Assists school leadership team in developing and implementing security procedures. 

Gives support with investigations of serious incidents.  With directions of the principal or designee, assists in controlling access to buildings and grounds by unauthorized persons, and in assuring that students report to their assigned instructional areas. Excellent oral communication and human relations skills. 

 

The Emergency Response Team (ERT) SROs will be responsible for rapid deployment to contain, control and neutralize any threats for safety and welfare of our stakeholders. This shall include any crowd control situation , gang activities, natural disasters, medical emergencies, speical events, and active shooters. 

 

Has knowledge of job, professionalism, interpersonal, communication and organization skills, and problem solving competencies.

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES (Asterisk for essential job duties):

 

  1. Patrols Board of Education facilities and properties to ensure a safe environment.
  2. Will serve as the Tactical Patrol Officers for the Richmond County School System. 
  3. Has knowledge of basic law to include criminal and civil statues, police procedures, Criminal Code of Georgia, Juvenile Court Code, and Basic Law Enforcement. Works with principals and administrators and other school personnel with regard to juvenile or adult offenses and to arbitrate for restitution.  (*)
  4. Conducts preliminary investigations and makes, written reports of incidents which take place on Board of Education properties. (*)
  5. Works with students, teachers, school leadership staff, governmental and community members, demonstrating knowledge of job and professionals. (*)
  6. Knows the procedures and practices for ensuring the safety and welfare of others.  Has knowledge of behavior management techniques.
  7. Enforces Board policies and rules, state and local laws and takes appropriate actions when violations are reported or observed. (*)
  8. Conducts random and requested searches consistent with policies and procedures and makes written reports. (*)
  9. Participates as a member of the School Emergency Management Team. (Participates and attends professional growth activities as needed (optional) or as required.
  10. Collects and preserves physical evidence at scene(s) or other incidents as required by circumstances. (*)
  11. Testifies and presents evidence in criminal court, any court of competent jurisdiction or at school disciplinary tribunal.
  12. Upon request of school or county police or other legal authority, may hold suspects for appropriate agency and confiscate physical evidence. (*)
  13. The employee shall carry out such other and further duties, whether specifically listed above or not, as are assigned or required by such employee’s supervisor, other appropriate school personnel, law board policy administrative regulation, department handbook, as are reasonably necessary to the efficient operation of the school system and its mission.

 

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS:   

 

Any combination of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge,

abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.  Must not have

been convicted of a felony or some other crime involving moral turpitude. 

 

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:

 

Must possess High school diploma, Associate’s degree or considerable college coursework in criminology,

law enforcement, or related field desirable.  Experience in work involving the welfare and safety of students

or others, preferably educational environment.  Experience in safety and security of persons and property. 

 

CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: 

 

Must be certified by the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (P.O.S.T.) as a Police Officer.  

Possession of a valid state driver’s license or equivalent.  First aid and CPR certification or willingness to

acquire within specified time.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: 

 

Must have sufficient physical strength to intervene in fights and physically restrain persons; stamina to spend long periods of time walking and standing and to complete security patrol duties.  Ability to patrol outdoors in inclement and extreme weather conditions.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: 

 

Must be twenty one years old and live within thirty mile radius of school system.  Must agree to work any

eight hour shift out of any twenty-four hours, seven days a week.  Required to occasionally work overtime

with appropriate compensation. (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.).  Required to work flexible

hours, including evenings and weekends, as assigned by the Captain of the RCSS Police Department to provide

maximum security coverage.  Special requirements to include the ability to lift and move heavy objects

(100 lbs. regularly and over 100 lbs. as needed) and frequent climbing.  Required to wear the designated

security uniforms.

 

To ensure optimum operational effectiveness, the ERT SROs must meet the following requirements:

· The SRO must demonstrate professional maturity, restraint and self control in stressful or dangerous situations.

· The SRO must be able to work effectively with others and display an ability to follow orders.

· The SRO personnel file must reflect no serious disciplinary history.

· The SRO must demonstrate firearms proficiency with the issued service weapons.

· The SRO must be in good physical condition and be able to maintain job proficiency and physical fitness.

· The SRO should possess the ability to interact with others in the achievement of unit goals under high stress situations, i.e. –  they must be a “team player.”

  • ERT SRO must compmlete an annual physical exam.
  • ERT SRO must submit to annual drug screenings. 

 

 

Training requirements:

· All ERT members must attend and pass the Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT)

· Member must pass the tactical rifle qualification course with the Department firearms Instructor

· SWAT level 1

· Crisis Intervention training (CIT)

· Mental health first aid training

· Additional de-escalation training and any other training approved by the Chief of Police

 

To ensure that ERT has ample opportunity to practice their specialized skills and develop

the ability to function effectively as a team, all ERT members will be required to engage in

periodic training and readiness exercises. 

 

ERT members are expected to maintain a sufficient level of physical fitness to meet the

rigorous demands of training and actual operations. This is an individual responsibility of

each team member. Annual physical fitness assessments of ERT members will be conducted to

ensure that adequate fitness levels are being maintained.
