Summary
As a TK-8 music teacher at the Parish School, the elements of music will be taught via the content standards as set forth by the Diocese of San Diego and the California State Standards. An appreciation of the art of music will be developed in each student to include :
- Artistic Perception – Teach students to read, write, and listen to and describe music
- Creative Expression – Train students to sing a repertoire of vocal literature representing various genres, styles, and cultures with expression, good posture, and tone quality
- Historical and Cultural Context – Teach students to understand and analyze the historical and cultural roots of music
- Music Appreciation – Aid students in deriving meaning from, and responding to, various works of music
The music teacher is responsible for leading the congregational singing and providing instrumental accompaniment at assigned weekend Masses. This role requires the ability to work in a Catholic environment of kindness, compassion, respect, integrity, mutual charity, and dignity. The musician must work collegially with other ministers in providing a music program that supports a dynamic and inspiring worship community reflective of the core values of the Catholic Church and Saint Pius X Catholic Parish.

Teaching Responsibilities :
Plan and deliver music instruction for students TK-8, creating lesson plans by utilizing repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary, that are appropriate for the various ages, grade levels, and skill levels of students according to developmental ability.Teach skills in music appreciation, harmony, and explorations in musicLead and direct school choir and / or musiciansPrepare students for school liturgies once a month on weekends and be present for those MassesPrepare students for weekday weekly school liturgies and provide the music for those MassesPlan, coordinate, rehearse, and conduct musical performances such as the Advent Program, Grandparents Day, Lenten Stations of the Cross, May Crowning, and any other musical events in which students are expected to perform as representatives of the schoolEstablish and maintain standards of productive and respectful classroom management that are aligned with Catholic valuesEstablish a positive, encouraging rapport with students that honors all ability levelsAssess and drive student growth through formative and summative assessmentsCommunicate effectively with parentsProvide sacred music at special liturgies as needed, such as Holy Days of ObligationInvite, encourage, and enhance assembly participation in the sacred musicEnsure ongoing expansion of the school’s music repertoireCollaborate with the pastor and parish’s liturgy coordinator in the selection of appropriate liturgical music for MassesEnsure that the parish musical instruments and audio equipment are maintained, repaired, tuned, and operational as neededCertify that all liturgical musicians and choir members are well-versed in the liturgy of the Church and the propriety of their duties, including an understanding of the rubrics of the ChurchAttain copyright permission for music as necessaryProvide musical input and copyright information for the preparation of worship aidsOther duties as assignedHours :
Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 8am - 2 : 30Thursdays 7 : 15am (due to morning choir) until 2 : 30 or 3pmRequirements :
Religious Qualifications :
Active, practicing Roman Catholic (preferred)Basic Catechetical Certification (preferred)Respects and understands a Catholic school philosophyProfessional Qualifications :
Possess a cleared California multiple subject teaching credential (preferred)Possess a Bachelor’s DegreeClear criminal background check (a clear Livescan for the Diocese of San Diego is a condition of employment)Experience teaching in an elementary school classroomPositive professional references and recommendationDemonstrable skill leading the congregation in prayerful participation in the liturgyEffective in directing amateur musicians and vocalists as neededAbility to “sight read” musicSinging voice appropriate for teaching choirProficiency in playing at least one musical instrumentKnowledge of sacred and secular musicAbility to communicate musical concepts effectivelyFriendly with excellent people and communication skillsAbility to work flexible hoursAbility to follow and take directions from a supervisorA faithful member of a Catholic parish communityAbility to sing in English, Spanish, and / or Tagalog a plusPhysical Requirements :
To successfully meet the needs of the students in his / her care, the teacher must :
Spend the majority of the day standing in the classroom. While standing the teacher will frequently hold objects they are working with or demonstratingSit on an occasional basis when developing lesson plans, grading, etc.Walk through the classroom and be able to maneuver in tight spaces between desks. Walk on both even and uneven surfacesDeal with students while kneeling or squatting, stooping, or bendingReach at, below, or above shoulder height with the dominant upper extremity; may require trunk or neck rotation to look back at the classAssist in moving children's desks and chairs to change the layout of the classroom to influence the learning situation. It is occasionally necessary to lift and carry boxes weighing up to 25 pounds from the office to classroomsWhile performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to be inside the classroom. The employee is required to be mobile to, from, and within the classroom and preschool environment, as well as maneuver throughout the school facility to attend meetings, trainings, and other work-related events. The employee may be required to conduct trips to, from, and within various city and county-wide locations to attend trainings or workshops.
