Summary Of Responsibilities
The Maintenance Assistant will perform basic upkeep and repairs on campus buildings and facilities, including tasks like changing light bulbs, fixing minor plumbing/HVAC/Boiler issues, cleaning common areas, performing minor repairs to furniture, and assisting skilled maintenance technicians with larger projects, all while ensuring the overall cleanliness and functionality of the University's grounds.
Essential Functions
The Maintenance Assistant will perform basic upkeep and repairs on campus buildings and facilities, including tasks like changing light bulbs, fixing minor plumbing/HVAC/Boiler issues, cleaning common areas, performing minor repairs to furniture, and assisting skilled maintenance technicians with larger projects, all while ensuring the overall cleanliness and functionality of the University's grounds.
Essential Functions
- Work with Grounds, Custodial, HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical, Carpentry or Painting. May temporarily be assigned to a different shop depending upon the nature and scope of the assigned project.
- HVAC maintenance assistance:
- Assist in monitoring and recording temperatures and conditions of refrigeration walk-ins, reach-ins, ice machines, ovens, steam kettles, and food warmers in.
- Assist in performing various welding, soldering and brazing functions.
- Assist in adding chemicals to boilers, the loop water system, cooling tower, air conditioner coils; de-scale kitchen steamer and ice machines.
- Assist in performing repairs and preventative maintenance for heating and cooling systems which includes V-belt replacement, adjustment, oiling and greasing, air filter replacement, bearings, shafts, electrical components, motors, compressor replacements, etc.
- Plumbing maintenance assistance:
- Assist with the maintenance and repair of all plumbing on campus.
- Assist with the monitoring of equipment operation in the mechanical rooms for needed repairs.
- Assist with the installation of dishwashers, garbage disposals, urinals, toilets, lavatories, sinks, piping, etc.
- Assist in performing various welding, soldering and brazing functions.
- Electrical maintenance assistance:
- Assist with maintenance and repair of all wiring, control and lighting systems on campus.
- Assist with the inspection of electrical components, such as transformers and circuit breakers.
- Assist with the identification of electrical problems with a variety of testing devices.
- Carpentry/Painting maintenance assistance:
- Assist with the installation of structures and fixtures, such as windows and molding.
- Measure, cut, or shape wood, plastic, and other materials.
- Assist with building cabinets, vanities, tub and shower surrounds and other projects.
- Assist in preparing painting surfaces by washing walls, repairing holes, or removing old paint.
- Assist in mixing, matching, and applying paints and other finishes to various surfaces.
- Assist with the painting of interiors and exteriors of campus buildings
- Sweep equipment and mechanical rooms and removes trash.
- Assist in maintaining shop inventory of supplies and materials.
- Assist in maintaining records.
- Assist in maintaining assigned office space, workshop and vehicle to include but not limited to sweeping, organizing and general cleanliness.
- Ability to work in inclement weather, bend, climb, lift 100 pounds plus.
- Must be able to perform on call duties.
- Maintains the highest level of confidentiality concerning all matters in the Facilities Services Office. Does not discuss in any manner any information obtained through work in the office.
- Other duties assigned
- Performs related work as directed by Supervisor assigned to.
- Must be able to work overtime, some evenings, nights and weekends.
- Graduation from a standard high school or equivalent is generally preferred.
- Experience and education may be substituted for one another.
- Some knowledge of plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, custodial and grounds preferred.
- Must have a valid Texas driver's license, related insurance and good driving record.
- Skill in the use and adjustment of electrical and mechanical equipment.
