What are the responsibilities and job description for the Safety Officer position at Schumacher Companies?
Position Summary: The Safety Officer shall assist in the development and implementation of a collaborative safety culture by continually monitoring and educating all company employees to ensure their safety as well as Schumacher Companies compliance with federal, state and local laws and regulations. The Safety Officer shall create, implement and enforce safety protocols in sync with Schumacher Values and shall promote best practices in operations and production.
Primary Responsibilities: Administration
- Develop and implement safety training programs for new hires and existing employees, including Annual Safety Day Training
- Partner with the Fleet Manager promoting safe driving practices, defensive driving training, telematics scorecard results and at fault accident corrective actions
- Manage Personal Protective Equipment acquisition, distribution, training and discipline
- Issue monthly Company newsletter on safety initiatives, Company protocols and progress
- Prepare agenda and lead monthly Safety Committee meetings
- Maintain Company confidentiality at all times
- Perform other duties within your scope of practice, as assigned by the Safety Committee Compliance
- Prepare seasonal job hazard assessments reports for all properties and establish site specific controls
- Regularly perform safety audits and inspections of job sites, facilities, equipment, and materials to minimize hazards and to promote continuous improvement in processes
- Provide relevant material for jobsite safety meetings (weekly toolbox talks) and audit meeting records for attendance
- Prepare and file OSHA logs and summaries
- Develop/manage the employee drug testing program
- Oversee employee safety records including timely renewal of various licenses
- Assist Finance Dept. with completion of construction prequalification and safety vetting programs
- Facilitate issuance of certificates of insurance and related endorsements Risk Management
- Responsible for managing all claims relative to worker’s compensation, automobile and property damage
- Collaborate with HR to ensure prompt and accurate information provided to employees relative to all workers compensation matters
- Respond to and Investigate all job-related accidents and incidents
- Serve as liaison to any insurance and regulatory investigators in on-site investigations and inspections; create and implement corrective action plans
- Facilitate early return to full duty work responsibilities for injured workers and provide light duty transitional work opportunities
- Work with employees and medical professionals on injury care management. As needed, accompany and transport employees to medical appointments related to work-related accidents
- Attend trainings and conduct self-study to stay current on all federal, state, and local regulations
Qualifications:
- A minimum of 3 years experience in a position that required safety as an integrated responsibility
- Communicate effectively with team members at all levels including office staff, field crews, foremen, and executive team (fluent in Spanish or Portuguese a plus)
- Maintain a positive work environment by fostering strong relationships with clients, subcontractors, co-workers, management and trade partners
- Technical knowledge of construction and general industry related OSHA, federal, state, and local regulatory standards, and ability to recognize hazardous situations and implement effective corrective practices
- Ability to travel frequently throughout New England
- Maintain a valid driver’s license
- Computer literacy and working knowledge of Microsoft and Google applications preferred
- First Aid/CPR certification or ability to obtain certification is required
