Assistant Special Education Director
Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree from an accredited institution.
- Certification as a Supervisor in Special Education; Elementary Principal or Secondary Principal.
- Minimum of five (5) years teaching experience in education. Preferably to have working knowledge in the areas of special education, school-age programs, early childhood, and mental health services.
- A broad background and/or knowledge in special education with working knowledge of all areas of exceptionality.
- Any alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Directors may find appropriate and acceptable.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Through the direction of the Director of Special Education, shall be responsible for planning, administering, and supervising specific areas of the general administrative and educational functions of the Special Education Department. Such areas shall include the coordination and development of early childhood, special education, and other student and family programs and services. To use leadership, supervisory, and administrative skills and direction in the coordination and development of special education and school-age programs.
- To maintain and monitor compliance under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and all school mandates. To provide leadership in the development and programming of curriculum to meet state standards and rigor to meet the needs of a diverse learning community.
Performance Responsibilities:
- Assist in the implementation of the activities of all early childhood, special education, and student programs and family services.
- Ensure that all programs within the Special Education Department comply with all governing federal and state statutes, regulations, rules, and organization policies.
- Facilitate the recruitment, selection, recommendation, supervision, and evaluation of professional and non-professional employees within the assigned programs.
- Coordinate and/or provide staff development, training, and consultation with Schuylkill Intermediate Unit and school district personnel, agencies, and parents.
- Assist with budgetary sources (e.g. federal, state, and local grant funds) for early childhood, special education, and student and family services issues, including seeking new revenue sources.
- Provide for the completion and submission of all federal, state, and local reports concerned with special education and student instructional and social services.
- Collaborate with all IU offices to communicate information, initiatives, and legal information with unity of purpose to school districts and agencies.
- Assist in establishing and maintaining classes and services within the Maple Avenue Campus. Provide input and assist the Director of Special Education in the development of budgets, state reports, and grant development.
- Advise the Director of Special Education on early childhood, special education, and student and family services issues.
- Maintain high standards of student conduct and enforce discipline as necessary, according to board policy, affording due process to the rights of students.
- Assist in the development and implementation of teacher orientation and in-service.
- Coordinate procedures for student programming with district LEAs.
- Participate in meetings for the benefit of school-age and early-intervention students.
- Exercise decisive leadership in crisis situations.
- Assume responsibilities for own professional growth and development and participate in local and state meetings relevant to the position.
- Perform other job-related duties as required or assigned by the Director of Special Education

Method of Evaluation:
- Performance of the job will be evaluated annually by the Director of Special Education per provisions of the Board’s Policy on evaluation of personnel.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Supervision of programs within the Maple Avenue Campus, all professional/non-professional personnel assigned to school-age programs, and school office secretaries.
Terms of Employment:
- The Assistant Director of Special Education shall be employed for twelve (12) months per year. Salary and benefits will be established by the Board of Education.

- This is an active position requiring the ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, and have the ability to lift and/or move objects up to 50 lbs.; verbal and hearing skills to effectively communicate; visual acuity to oversee projects, and make observations. Work is done mainly indoors but could include outside tasks.
