What are the responsibilities and job description for the Middle School EnglishTeacher position at Science Academy of Chicago?
Science Academy of Chicago is seeking a strong, experienced middle school English teacher to add to our ELA team for the 2025-26 school year who is a child-centered professional with a high degree of energy, flexibility, and initiative as well as well-developed interpersonal skills.
- Is responsible for teaching reading, writing, speaking, and critical thinking skills to students. Their role varies depending on grade level, but typically includes lesson planning, classroom management, and student assessment
- Teach literature, grammar, vocabulary, and composition to enhance students' reading and writing skills
- Expectations are that teachers will practice reflective teaching strategies and seek continuous self-improvement
- Strong classroom management with experience teaching in a structured classroom environment
- Collaborate with grade level teachers and promote cross curricular projects
- Ability to communicate concrete and abstract concepts to students
- Ability to spot and cultivate creativity
- Create a developmentally appropriate, positive, inclusive and safe learning environment
- Monitor progress to ensure all students are demonstrating high rates of growth
- Provide individualized support to students who need extra help with reading and writing
- Integrate technology and multimedia resources to enhance learning
- Encourage a love for literature and writing by exposing students to a diverse range of texts
- Maintain accurate and complete records of students' progress and development
- Demonstrate preparation and skill in working with students from diverse social-emotional, cultural, economic and ability backgrounds
- Work closely with team members and parents to best meet the needs to students
- Align all curriculum to CCSS
- Experience with teaching accelerated curriculum
- Experience with strong classroom management
- Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in English, Education, or a related field (Master’s preferred)
- Strong knowledge of English literature, writing techniques, and grammar
- Excellent communication and classroom management skills
- Experience in differentiated instruction and student-centered teaching methods
- Illinois Professional Educator License is Preferred
- Job Type: Full-time
