The purpose of the Kitty Andersen Youth Science Center's (KAYSC) Youth Crew Manager role is to lead youth programming for High School Students who are from backgrounds which are underrepresented in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) careers. Managers utilize coaching, youth development tenets, service-learning, family engagement, inquiry / experiential learning, community outreach and cultural competency as core strategies to build assets for youth. These long-term informal education projects and positive youth development programs fall within KAYSC High School Programs under leadership of the Program Manager.

Job Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Manage the recruitment, onboarding, supervision and retention of youth workers at the KAYSC.
  • Direct the work of high school students to complete STEM justice projects in the community. Lead well-planned programming logistics and agenda, to ensure successful program delivery. Implement best youth development practices to supervise and support high school students, ensuring an appropriate environment through communication, space, materials, equipment, and program content.
  • Develop and implement year-long, multi-year programs, that focus on building the leadership capacity in youth by connecting the dots between STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) content, Social Justice, and Community Engagement by creating curriculum and connecting with community members and experts to scaffold youth development and learning.
  • Design and conduct interdisciplinary STEM justice activities that help youth explore community issues by listening to the community, creating STEM-based solutions to community issues, and developing creative ways to share projects in the community to make a positive impact.
  • Manage youth salary and materials budgets for youth crew(s), including planning and managing expenses for program and project activities with guidance from program manager and / or director.
  • Manage, create and maintain relationships with community partners that support current and future programming.
  • Document program activities, STEM Justice curriculum, and prepare various reports. Manage record keeping, evaluation of program and other documentation as needed.
  • Help to maintain KAYSC community partner databases with updated partner information & coordinate communication about crew events and activities to partners as necessary.
  • Direct the work of interns and STEM Justice Track Coordinators assigned to the crew.
  • Attend department and division meetings as necessary to advance the goals of the department.
  • Demonstrate organization in all areas of work, including communication, assigned tasks and deadlines.

  • Minimum Qualifications :

  • Education : Some post-secondary coursework required. Some post-secondary level course work in positive youth development theories valued but not required.
  • Experience :
  • Experience managing youth (ages 12-18) in programmatic or customer service roles, preferably on projects in art, science and / or technology.

  • Experience working with diverse teens and communities, especially those with least access to science and technology resources (e.g. girls, low-income and communities of color).
  • Experience as a mentor, staff or family member supporting others with positive personal and / or professional development.
  • Understanding of, and a strong personal commitment to, social justice, especially opportunity gaps in education and careers for young people from backgrounds underrepresented in STEM careers.
  • Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Certifications : Valid driver's license required.
  • Work Environment : Will be working primarily in the KAYSC offices at the Science Museum of Minnesota with occasional field trips and external meetings. Work schedule involves occasional evenings and weekends. Must be able to transport self for work activities.
  • Starting Compensation : $21.85 - $24.42 / hour (depending on qualifications)
