The SARA High Power Electromagnetics Division (HPEM) is looking for a remarkably talented, motivated, and imaginative Senior Electrical Engineer - Diagnostic Instrumentation to support research and development activities and transition innovative technologies to the DoD, DoE, and their contractors in Colorado Springs, CO. The candidate will have the opportunity to grow and learn with talented engineers, physicists, and technicians on long-standing programs and new programs supporting our customers. Our small group will allow the candidate to experience, contribute, and collaborate in a multidisciplinary nature from conception all the way through to operation.
The Senior Electrical Engineer - Diagnostic Instrumentation to execute advanced electrical measurements across diverse test environments, conducting diagnostics from slow, distributed to ultra-fast, localized scenarios. The role involves designing and implementing test beds in laboratory settings, supporting electrical measurement across complex technical domains, and executing precision diagnostic techniques. We seek a skilled engineer capable of navigating intricate measurement challenges, contributing to technological innovation and mentoring junior engineers, with a focus on comprehensive electrical measurement and technical problem-solving.
Core Responsibilities:
- Plan, develop, and implement advanced diagnostic measurement systems, primarily for electromagnetic domains, but also for other physical domains such as thermal, mechanical, and optical
- Perform precise data acquisition across test scenarios
Technical Expertise:
- Expert in time/frequency domain measurements
- Advanced electromagnetic physics understanding
- Mastery of diagnostic instruments
- Proficient in:
- Differential/single-ended measurements
- Noise characterization
- EMC/EMI testing
- Ground reference systems
- Skilled in Fourier analysis, transient response, complex system interpretation
- Focus: High-precision electrical measurements with deep physical insight
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree with 8 years of experience (or Master's degree with 4 years or new PhD) in Electrical Engineering or Physics
- Demonstrated expertise in diagnostic testing and measurement systems
- Advanced proficiency with diagnostic equipment (oscilloscopes, signal generators, network analyzers)
- Strong data analysis skills using Excel, MATLAB, and Mathcad
- Proven track record of complex field and laboratory testing
- Available for up to 25% travel for on-site testing
- Experience working in varied test environments
- Self-motivated with demonstrated ability to work independently
- Strong problem-solving skills with resilience in challenging situations
- Excellent documentation and technical communication abilities
- Proven ability to manage multiple priorities in dynamic environments
- Track record of continuous learning and skill development
- US Citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain DoD Top Secret security clearance
- May require moderate physical effort, involving standing, sitting and use of hands while performing duties, carrying or lifting up to 25 pounds
- Working environment is mostly indoor, moderately loud at times, reasonably clean, well-lighted and well-ventilated, moderate physical hazards may exist
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree with 12 years of experience (or Master’s with 8 years or PhD with 4 years) in Electrical Engineering or Physics
- Active DoD Top Secret or DoE Q clearance
- Programming proficiency in test automation languages (Python, C , C#)
- Demonstrated potential for technical leadership
- Experience mentoring junior engineers in diagnostic techniques
- Background in automated test development
- Familiarity with electromagnetic modeling tools
- Experience with custom diagnostic system design
- Knowledge of signal integrity and high-speed measurements
- Background in writing test procedures and measurement methodologies

Pay Range
Salary at SARA is determined by various factors, including but not limited to location, the individual’s particular combination of education, knowledge, skills, competencies, and experience, as well as contract-specific affordability and organizational requirements. The projected compensation range for this position is $100,000 to $160,000 (annualized USD). The estimate displayed represents the typical salary range for this position and is just one component of SARA’s total compensation package for employees. Positions are on-site, unless indicated otherwise.
