JOB SUMMARY

Join our team at Scientific Protein Laboratories (SPL), a world leader in biosourced pharmaceuticals, located just outside of Madison, Wisconsin in Waunakee! SPL is an innovative biopharmaceutical leader with unique products and services supporting the pharmaceutical industry globally. For over 40 years, SPL specializes in the development and cGMP compliant manufacturing of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs). SPL has an exciting opportunity to join the team as a Molecular Technologies Scientist.

This position is responsible for working independently or with minimal guidance to develop and validate complex laboratory molecular biology techniques to detect viruses in active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) following strict written procedures to meet compendial and custom specifications. This work is performed under cGMP/FDA guidelines. Initiates and executes independent analytical and systems improvement projects. With minimal assistance, writes documentation to support infectious agent risk mitigation strategies for current and new APIs. This position is a technical leadership role with responsibility for overseeing daily activities of analytical activities related to molecular technologies.

Responsibilities include:

Perform scheduled laboratory testing of raw material, in-process, finished product APIs or specialty products as needed to develop new test methods.

Independently develops new test methods using molecular biology techniques like RT-qPCR, NGS, etc. and executes experiments to optimize the procedures.

Meticulously record all data results on appropriate documents and in electronic files, including immediate communication of issues to management, both in own work and others in the lab.

With minimal assistance from management, author, execute and interpret laboratory experiments, analytical methods and instrument validation efforts as necessary.

Lead and train other analysts in overall laboratory processes/systems and in general and complex assays, as required.

In areas of ownership, coordinate with vendors and other analysts to perform routine calibration and preventive maintenance of laboratory equipment.

Review/revise/author SOPs and serve as a technical resource to ensure compliance with compendial documents.

Oversee, review and interpret the work of other analysts.

With minimal assistance from management, authors documents to support infectious agent risk management for current and new APIs or other specialty products.

With minimal assistance from management, develop and execute validation plans for new test methods.
Maintain a high level of cleanliness in the laboratory and strictly adheres to cleaning and gowning procedures to avoid cross-contamination between experiments performed in the laboratory.
Follow SOPs in a cGMP environment to obtain accurate results.
Prepare and qualify reagents in a timely manner to support ongoing development work.
Manages inventory of reagents and materials. Prepares requisitions to purchase materials as necessary to maintain throughput of the laboratory.
With minimal assistance from management, manage change controls to support new test methods or equipment.

Job Requirements and Qualifications:

Education: Master's degree in molecular biology, virology, or related discipline required. Doctorate degree or other advanced degree in molecular biology, virology, or related discipline, preferred.
Experience: 5 plus years required, 10 plus years preferred. Proficient in molecular biology techniques like nucleic acid extraction and qPCR and in using bioinformatics tools. Experience with library preparation methods and next-generation sequencing platforms is highly desirable.
