Scion Nonprofit Staffing has been engaged to conduct an immediate search for an experienced Senior Legal Counsel on behalf of our client, a highly respected organization dedicated to advancing policies and governance initiatives in the education sector. This incredible leadership role provides legal guidance, supports key organizational initiatives, and oversees critical compliance and risk management functions. The Senior Legal Counsel will also supervise the Human Resources division and contribute to shaping impactful legal strategies that align with the organizationâ?™s mission. This full-time position is for immediate hire and offers a hybrid work arrangement based in Sacramento, California .

RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Provide legal counsel on organizational business and contractual matters.
  • Draft, review, and revise legal documents, including contracts and policies.
  • Support litigation efforts and ensure compliance with corporate obligations.
  • Advise on legal compliance matters, ensuring adherence to applicable laws and regulations.
  • Supervise and provide strategic guidance to the Human Resources division.
  • Represent the organization in the absence of the General Counsel.
  • Interpret the impact of legal and policy changes, offering guidance to stakeholders.
  • Support legal initiatives related to governance, policy services, and education law.
  • Conduct legal research and develop materials for publications and presentations.
  • Oversee risk management and compliance efforts.
  • Foster strong relationships with regulatory bodies, legal partners, and external stakeholders.
  • Lead internal training on legal issues and compliance matters.
  • Occasionally travel within California, including some overnight travel.

QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Juris Doctorate (JD) degree; licensed to practice law in California (active and in good standing).
  • 7-10 years of legal experience, with a focus on education law, labor and employment law, and nonprofit corporate law.
  • Experience in litigation support, compliance, and policy development.
  • Prior experience in a leadership role or as in-house counsel preferred.
  • Strong understanding of public education policies, labor relations, and regulatory compliance.
  • Experience supervising teams and providing strategic HR guidance.
  • Exceptional communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to develop and implement legal strategies aligned with organizational objectives.
  • Strong research, analytical, and risk management skills.
  • COMPENSATION & BENEFITS :

    This leadership role offers a competitive salary range of $155,000 - $200,000 annually, depending on experience, along with a comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, vision, retirement contributions, and generous paid time off.
