Job Summary
The Registered Nurse (RN) delivers direct and indirect patient care through the nursing process, including assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation.
Key Responsibilities
- Develops nursing care plans in coordination with patients, families, and interdisciplinary staff as necessary.
- Communicates changes in patient's clinical condition with physicians, nursing supervisors/managers, and co-workers as appropriate.
- Maintains standards of nursing care and implements hospital and nursing department policies and procedures.
- Directs, supervises, provides, and evaluates nursing care provided to patients.
- Assigns or delegates tasks based on patient needs, potential for harm, complexity of the task, and within scope of practice of assigned staff.
Patient Care
The RN performs assessment on all patients on admission and reassessments as per policy. They develop nursing care plans of assigned patients on admission, update plans of care as needed, and ensure plans of care are coordinated with patients, families, and other members of the team.
Care Coordination
The RN communicates with social service/discharge planners regarding both in-hospital and post-discharge needs. They also participate in orientation, instruction/training of new personnel.
Education and Qualifications
A registered nurse should have a graduation from an accredited Bachelors of Science in Nursing, Associate Degree in Nursing, or Nursing Diploma program. A minimum of one year ED experience in an acute care setting is preferred.
