Job Summary:
The ideal candidate for this role will bring strong technical and relationship building skills to efficiently and accurately assess the risk and profitability of the Property Cat reinsurance portfolio. You will participate in the reinsurance renewal process and partner closely with underwriting and actuarial pricing teams both in the US and globally. Your primary responsibility is to price property cat reinsurance treaties covering North American exposures. The pricing exercise is a complex analytical process requiring technical expertise and judgement. Modelled results, cedent loss history, market knowledge and individual account charateristics must be weighed and a final range of outcomes and point estimate of account profitability are arrived upon. This process will be a collaboration between you and the underwriter to establish a consistent and wholistic view of the client and the reinsurance contract and how it fits into the overall reinsurance portfolio.
In addition, you will lead and participate in projects to help shape and define the company's view of risk for natural catastrophe perils in the region. This will involve research and analysis around the emerging topics of climate change, economic trends, social inflation, and more. This will be done collaboratively with Cat experts in the team and stakeholders throughout the company including the Cat R&D team, the actuarial pricing team, underwriting, business analytics and more.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide treaty reinsurance catastrophe modelling support to underwriters. Analyze cedant exposure/modelled results received from clients/brokers and import into vendor risk modelling environment for in-house modelling; identify key drivers impacting the portfolio performance to support the decision-making and drive company growth in the region.
- Support the monitoring and validation of used capacities using specific tools.
- Contribute to and lead development and implementation of consistent process and procedures for pricing, and best practices for modelling, including tool development.
- Work with stakeholders globally to design automated and semi-automated processes to deliver our work product more efficiently ; develop tools, methods, and processes to allow low/medium risk reinsurance treaties to be priced and analyzed in a streamlined way.
- Support business as required with appropriate projects on Nat Cat topics; participate in Nat Cat projects such as model evaluation, sensitivity testing and calibration studies.
- Perform analysis to help underwriting gain a deeper understanding of hazard, vulnerability and model behavior; evaluate and interrogate vendor models to develop appropriate risk-views for pricing and accumulation.
- Mentor less senior staff during renewals and project work, and act as a reference for the modelled view of risk for all natural perils in the US.
- Regularly participate in client meetings to better understand client/market risks, experienced in giving structural advice and new ideas, and drive product innovation.
Desired Experience & Competencies:
- 7 years of catastrophe modeling experience.
- Modeling experience with a major vendor, e.g. RMS or AIR.
- Strong knowledge of catastrophe loss modelling systems and processes.
- Reinsurance and/or large account pricing experience a plus.
- Strong SQL skills preferred.
- Experience extracting and analyzing large volumes of data with R, Python, or GIS a plus.
- Experience with data visualization tools such as PowerBI and/or Tableau desired.
- MS Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel & PowerPoint).
- Strong analytical, problem solving skills.
- Strong organizational and time management are required; ability to multi-task.
- Clear communicator, able to structure an argument and ability to explain complex issues in a simple way.
- Team player, interested in sharing knowledge and helping to develop the team.
Desired Education:
- BS in science, mathematics, engineering, actuarial science or a related quantitative discipline.
- Advanced degree in science (e.g., climatology, atmospheric science, engineering) a plus.
- Catastrophe modelling certifications preferred.
- Underwriting certifications (CPCU, ARe) a plus.
Pay Range: Pay Range for roles performed in Illinois: $140,000 - $185,000 base salary per year. Pay Range for roles performed in New York: $150,000 - $202,000 base salary per year. Actual salaries may vary based on various factors including but not limited to location, experience, role and performance. The range listed is just one component of SCOR's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include annual bonuses, short- and long-term incentives.
